Cahill Municipal Projects Manager City of Carlsbad 2075 Las Palmas Drive Carlsbad, CA 92009-4859 PRELIMINARY REPORT OF SUPPLEMENTAL DESIGN STUDIES SOUTH REVETMENT AREA CARLSBAD BOULEVARD SHORE PROTECTION CARLSBAD, CALIFORNIA Dear Mr. Cahill: RECEIVED SEP 13 1991 MUNICIPAL PROJECTS DIVISION In accordance with your request, we are proceeding with additional studies in the area of the proposed south revetment at the subject project. The purpose of these additional studies is to evaluate possible alternative methods to a rock revetment in this area. Our supplemental study includes an additional geotechnical investigation in the area, evaluation of several vertical seawall alternatives, selection of a preferred alternative, a preliminary cost estimate of the preferred alternative and an estimate of the area of beach recovered. We completed our additional field investigation on September 6; 1991 which included a visual observation of the area, mapping of the location of the toe of the fill and the drilling of three test borings. Laboratory analysis of the soil samples obtained from the test borings is in progress. Based on the preliminary data from the test borings, we have made a preliminary analysis of three alternative vertical walls: Steel sheet piles with concrete cap; Steel H-piles with wood or concrete lagging; and Reinforced concrete on steel H-pile foundation. All Of these walls would require a railing on top, toe stone and some stone protection at the south end. Consulting Engineers, Geologists and Environmental Scientists Offices in Other Principal Cities. Mr. John J. Cahill Wo Nard•Clyde Consultants City. of Carlsbad September 11, 1991 Page 2 The preliminary preferred vertical wall is the steel sheet piles with a concrete cap, similar to the walls proposed for the north and middle portions of the project. The wall would extend along the existing approximate + 16 feet contour. It would be approximately 360 feet long and turned-in about.5 to 10 feet at each end. An aluminum railing would extend along the top of the wall. It is estimated that the cost would be approximately $400,000 to $450,000 (as compared to $300,000 for the rock revetment). The fill in front of the wall could be regraded to an approximate elevation of +11 to + 12 feet and reclaimed as beach area. It is estimated that the reclaimed area would be approximately 3,500± square feet. It is further suggested that the proposed rock ramp for the lifeguards be deleted. A typical Section and Plan are attached for your information, please call if you have any questions.
