Cook, Principal Construction Inspector, City of Carlsbad FROM: Rick E. Larson, Senior Geotechnical Engineer, Kleinfelder, Inc. f DATE: August 2, 1994 KLEINFELDER FILE NO.: 51-1791-00-014 SUBJECT: PALOMAR AIRPORT ROAD IMPORT FILL,STATION 202+00 AVENIDA ENCINAS EXTENSION CARLSBAD, CALIFORNIA The purpose of this memorandum us to provide our preliminary test results and opinion regarding the use of the Palomar Airport Road import fill. Samples of the fill were taken by our staff from the stockpile at Station 202+00 as designated by City of Carlsbad staff. Several samples of the stockpile were taken. Over two-thirds of the material sampled was similar in composition and was a yellow brown silty sand (SM) with approximately 32 percent fine-grained soil with the following parameters: R-value =20 Expansion index =22 It is our opinion that the stockpiled silty sand from Station 202 + 00 can be used as general fill on the project except for the roadway subgrade for Avenida Encinas between Stations 40 + 20 and 50 + 00. The fill should not be used in this section of roadway subgrade since the R-value of the proposed import fill does not meet the minimum design R-value of 34. The excepted area for use of this fill between the two referenced stations is within four feet of the finished grade for the width of the traveled way plus three feet on each side. Unless the pavement section is redesigned between Stations 40+20 and 50 + 00, soil with a minimum R-value of 34 should be used in accordance with the project soils report. Please contact our office at (619) 541-1145 should you have any questions regarding this memorandum. cc: Ron Thomson P RECEIVED AuG 4 'E-.
