SUBBASE MATERIALS PALOMAR AIRPORT ROAD AND LOWDER LANE CARLSBAD, CALIFORNIA As requested, we have had laboratory tests made on soil samples of mate- rials from designated pits to ascertain their suitability for use as base and/or subbase materials in flexible pavement sections for the subject project. Samples 1, 2, and 3 were obtained, respectively, from pits known as Thibodo Pit - County Pit #741, Packing Shed Pit, and Mesa Pit. Grain size gradation, sand equivalent, laboratory compaction, and R-Value tests were performed on Sample 1, and grain size gradation and sand equivalent tests were performed on Samples 2 and 3. The R-Value test on Sample 1 was performed for us by Testing Engineers, Incorporated. The results of the laboratory tests are attached. Based on our analysis of the test results, it is our opinion that the. generally well graded course to fine materials of Sample 1, with a sand equivalent value of 61, and anR-Value of 78, are satisfactory for use as base course materials for the pavement sections proposed inôur letter of November 20, 1969, in lieu of the Class 2 Aggregate Base indicated. It is also our opinion that the materials of Sample-3 meet the minimum requirements for Class 3 Aggregate Subbase per State of California Division. of Highways Standard Specification 25-1 .02, and are suitable for use in pavement sections proposed for use with Class 3 Subbase by our letter of November 20, 1969. . In view of the above, it is recommended that the pavement design. sec-. tions proposed. as Alternates 3 in our letter of November 20, 1969, be used for both Palomar Airport Road and Lowder Lane, and that the mate-• rials from Thibodo Pit - County Pit #741 representative, of Sample 'l ' and materials from the Mesa Pit representative of Sample 3 be used: as base and subbase, respectively. .. • .
