Grading Plans for Redeemer-By-The-Sea, Lutheran Church of Carlsbad, by Sowers and Brown Engineering,-Inc., 11 sheets, project no CT 00-22, stamp date September 26, 2002 (Sheet 3) 4 Standards for Design and Construction of Public Works Improvements in the City of Carlsbad, California In conformance with your request and the requirements of the City of Carlsbad, we have prepared this letter presenting our pavement design recommendations for Fisherman Drive at the Redeemer by the Sea Project in the City of Carlsbad, California. Two representative sub grade soil samples were obtained along Fisherman Drive and• transferred to the laboratory for R-Value Testing. The Laboratory (Southern California Soil and Testing, Inc) performed R-Value testing in accordance with Caltrans Test Method 301. Sample Number Location R- 1 Station 6+00 Fisherman Drive R-2 Station 3+00 Fishèrmañ Drive Sample Description R- Value fine-medium silty sand 23 fine-medium silty sand 25 Based on the project plans (reference # 3), Fisherman Drive is a local street connecting to Poinsettia Lane. Based on the City requirement (reference #4), the traffic index (TI) for • local streets is 5.0. The pavement section (per reference #4) for local streets having R_ values of 23, and 25 is 4 inch AC over 5-inch AB / We recommend a section of 4 inch AC over 6-inch class II base for Fisherman Drive Prior to the placement of the class II aggregate Base material, the upper 12 inches of sub- grade soils in the street (including curb and gutter), shall be scanfied, moisture conditioned (wetted or dried) as necessary to at least 2 percent over optimum moisture content and compacted to a minimum 95 percent relative compaction based on ASTM D 1557 The Class II aggregate base shall then be placed and compacted to a minimum 95 percent relative compaction in accordance with ASTM Test Method D 1557 The aggregate base material shall be a minimum of 6 inch thick below curb and gutter and extend a minimum of 6 inch behind the back of curb The Class II aggregate base shall conform to, and shall be placed in accordance with, the latest revision of the California Department of Transportation Standard Specifications (Section 26), the Greenbook specifications, and/or the City of Carlsbad requirements Asphalt concrete shall conform to and be placed in accordance with the Greenbook Standard Specifications for Public Works Construction and the City. of Carlsbad requirements GE OlE C N N CAL CONSUL TAN IS Page October 13, 2004 If pavements are planned adjacent to landscaped areas, we recommend that appropriate measures be taken to reduce the possible adverse effects of water on the pavement sub- grade. In conformance with City requirements, AC "paving shall be done in a minimum of two lifts with the surface course done just prior to occupancy." Note the City requirement, "All aggregate base materials shall he Class II per Cal-Trans Section 26-1.02B or CMB per section 200-2.4, SSPWC." All aggregate product will need current testing results of the product for approval prior to beginning any import operation. In addition, the imported product will require field check by our personnel during import operations to verify uniformity of the product quality. Should you have any questions, please do no tact Inc.
