Project No. 1916-CO 1 5900 Pasteur Court, Suite 200 Log No. 08-1400 Carlsbad, CA 92008 Subject: Pavement Analysis for Lot 12 Carlsbad Ranch Carlsbad, CA Dear Mr. Zelenka: In accordance with your request, we are providing this pavement analysis for the Carlsbad Ranch Lot 12. A total of three soil samples were obtained at different locations on the rough graded subgrade planned to receive pavement. Resistance R-value testing was performed in general accordance with Caltrans Test Method 301. The R-value results are summarized below. Sample No. Location. R-Value - 1 East End Area 70 L 2 Middle Area 55 3 West End Area 53 Our engineering analysis for the asphalt concrete structural section was based upon the standard design procedures for pavement as outlined in Caltrans Highway Design Manual. Our analysis incorporates the Traffic Index provided in the project geotechnical report of Leighton and Associates, Inc., dated April 11, 2005, a Traffic Index of 4.5 and 5.0 for automobile parking and driveway, respectively. The minimum R-value of 53 was utilized in the analysis. With the above parameters, the pavement Section of 3 inches AC and 4 inches AB shown on the approved plans is sufficiently adequate up to a Traffic Index of 6.0. However, based upon the City of Carlsbad, Standard No. GS-17, the corresponding minimum pavement section shall be 4 inches AC and 4 inches AB for a Traffic Index of 4.5 and 5.0. Office Locations. Base material shall conform to the requirements of Section 200-2 of the Standard Specifications for Public Works Construction (SSPWC). The relative compaction of the base material shall not be less than 95 percent per Test Method ASTM D1557. Asphalt concrete shall be dense, hot-laid, hot mix asphalt plant mixes with a history of satisfactory performance in geographical area where project is located and approved by authorities having jurisdiction. Hot-mix asphalt paving materials, workmanship and other requirements shall be in accordance with the state standard specifications or SSPWC.
