Dear Mr. Zelenka
At the request of the Project Superintendent and in conjunction with the City of Carlsbad
requirements, additional soil samples were obtained on Grand Pacific Drive for pavement
analysis. This report presents the results of analysis and recommendation.
Soil Sampling
Representative soil samples were obtained within the current finish subgrade to receive
pavement. A total of three samples were obtained on Grand Pacific Drive.
Laboratory Testing
The soil samples were brought to our laboratory and Resistance R-value testing was performed
in general accordance with Caltrans Test Method 301. The R-value results are summarized
below. .
Location R-Value
Grand Pacific Dr. Sta. 23+00 14
Grand Pacific Dr. Sta. 26+00 21
Grand Pacific Dr. Sta. 29+00 70
The R-value results at Stations 23+00 and 26+00 are similar with those previously tested at
between Stations 4+50 and 16+00, due to similar soil types. As such, the pavement structural
section is the same as presented in our report dated April 11, 2007, which are reiterated herein.
However, the R-value result at Sta. 29+00 is significantly high (R-value = 70) due to differing
soil type consisting of near white/light gray sand. This soil type appear to start at
approximately Station 27+00 and extending to Hidden Valley Road.

Pavement Structural Section
Our engineering analysis for the pavement structural section presented in this report was
derived based upon the standard design procedures for pavement as outlined in Caltrans
Highway Design Manual. Our analyses included the Traffic Indices provided in the Leighton
and Associates, Inc. geotechnical report dated April 11, 2005. These Traffic Indices are 4.5 for
auto parking areas, 5.0 for auto driveways, 6.0 for light duty truck driveways and 7.0 for
moderate duty truck driveways. Following the minimum structural section as required per the
GS-17 of the City of Carlsbad, the recommended asphalt concrete pavement sections are
summarized below.
Stations 23+00 to 26+00 (Average R-value = 17
Loading
Condition Traffic Index Asphalt Concrete Aggregate Base
Auto Parking Areas 4.5 4.0 inches 4.0 inches
Auto Driveways 5.0 4.0 inches 6.0 inches
Light Duty Truck Driveways 6.0 4.0 inches 11.0 inches
Moderate Duty Truck Driveways 7.0 4.0 inches 13.0 inches
Moderate Duty Truck Driveways 7.0 5.0 inches 11.0 inches
Station 29+00 (Soil Type - Near White/Light Gray Sand, R-value = 70
Loading
Condition Traffic Index Asphalt Concrete Aggregate Base
Auto Parking Areas 4.5 4.0 inches 4.0 inches
Auto Driveways 5.0 4.0 inches 4.0 inches
Light Duty Truck Driveways 6.0 4.0 inches 6.0 inches
Moderate Duty Truck Driveways 1 7.0 1 4.0 inches 6.0 inches
Above recommended pavement sections may be subject for approval by the office of the City
of Carlsbad prior to implementation.
Construction Considerations
The upper 12 inches of subgrade should be compacted to a minimum of 95 percent relative
compaction based on ASTM D1557.
Grand Pacific Resort Project No. 1916-AO1
Page 3 Log No. 07-797
Base material should conform to the requirements of Section 200-2 of the Standard
Specifications for Public Works Construction (SSPWC). Base material shall be spread and
compacted in one or two layers of approximately equal thickness and the maximum compacted
thickness of any one layer shall not exceed 6 inches. Appropriate moisture is required during
compacting. The relative compaction of each layer of compacted base material shall not be
less than 95 percent per Test Method ASTM D1557.
Asphalt concrete shall be dense, hot-laid, hot mix asphalt plant mixes with a history of
satisfactory performance in geographical area where project is located and approved by
authorities having jurisdiction. Hot-mix asphalt paving materials, workmanship and other
requirements shall be in accordance with the state standard specifications or SSPWC.
Geotechnical ObservationlTesting
The geotechnical consultant should perform geotechnical observation and testing to ascertain
that conditions corresponds to the findings and conclusions and that construction conform
generally to the recommendations presented herein.
T imitRtions
The analyses, conclusions and recommendations contained in this report were based using the
standard of care and skill ordinarily exercised under similar circumstances by reputable
engineers and geologists currently practicing in this or similar localities. No other warranty or
representation, either expressed or implied, is included or intended.
If you have any questions regarding our report, please do not hesitate to contact this office. We
appreciate this opportunity to be of service.
