This report presents the results of analysis and recommendation. Soil Snpliig Representative soil samples were obtained within the current finish subgrade to receive pavement. A total of seven samples were obtained on Grand Pacific Drive. In addition, two samples were obtained on Lot 1 driveway and one sample on Lot 16 driveway (Sheet 12 of 19 Improvement Plans for Carlsbad Ranch Planning Area No. 5, Resort Site - Phase 1). Laboratory Testing The soil samples were brought to our laboratory and Resistance R-value testing was performed in general accordance with Caltrans Test Method 301. The R-value results are summarized below. Grand Pacific Drive Station { R-Value 4+50 13 6+50 14 8+00 21 9+50 13 12+00 12 14+00 13 16+00 13 Os Angeles entura County 3010 San Fernando Road flit 1 ylmar, CA 91342 L. 818.833.8100 ö8.833.0085 an Diego nperial County 313 Carroll Road ulte G an Diego, CA 92121 l: 858.537.3999 x: 858.537.3990 land Empire 4467 Meridian Parkway ulidifig 2A iverside, CA 92518 l: 951.653.4999 x: 951.653.4666 C/LA/Inland Empire ispatch 00.491.2990 aOiego Dispatch 060 ww.mtglinc.com Grand Pacific Resort Project No. 1916-A01 Page 2 Log No. 07-703 Lot 1 and Lot 16 (Driveway) W - Station R-Value .30+00 (Lot l) 44 31+50 (Lot l 25 11+O0 (Lot 16) 17 Disregarding the highest of the R-values (44), the remaining nine R-values range from a low of 12 to a high of 25, with a variance of 13. Since the variance between the low and high R- values is less than 15, then the average of the nine R-values, (average R-va1ue16) could be utilized for the pavement design. This is a usual standard procedure being implemented by various city agencies. Included in this report are the laboratory test data for each soil sample. Pavement Structural Section Our engineering analysis for the pavenent structural section presented in this report was derived based upon the standard design procedures for pavement as outlined in Caltrans Highway Design Manual. Our analyses included the Traffic Indices provided in the Leighton and Associates, Inc. geotechnical report dated April 11, 2005. These Traffic In&ces are 4.5 for auto parking areas, 5.0 for auto driveways, 6.0 for light duty truck driveways and 7.0 for moderate duty truck driveways. The average R-value of 16 was utilized in the analysis. With these parameters and following the minimum structural section as required per the GS-17 of the City of Carlsbad, the recommended asphalt concrete pavement sections are summarized below. Loading Condition . Traffic Index Asphalt Concrete Aggregate Base Auto Parking Areas 4€) 4.5 4.0 inches 4.0 inches Auto Driveways VIV, 5.0 4.0 inches 6.0 inches Light Duty Truck Driveways 6.0 4.0 inches 11.0 inches Moderate Duty Truck Driveways 7.0 4.0 inches 13.0 inches Moderate. Duty Truck Driveways 7.0 50 inches 11.0 inches Above recommended pavement sections may be subject for approval by the office of the City of Carlsbad prior to implementation. Construction Considerations The upper 12 inches of subgrade should be compacted to a minimum of 95 percent relative compaction based on ASTM D1557. 0 1, Grand Pacific Resort Project No. 1916-AOl Page 3 Log No. 07-703 Base material should conform to the requirements of Section 200-2 of the Standard Specifications for Public Works Construction (SSPWC). Base material shall be spread and compacted in one or two layers of approximately equal thickness and the maximum compacted thickness of any one layer shall not exceed 6 inches. Appropriate moisture is required during compacting. The relative compaction of each layer of compacted base material shall not be less than 95 percent per Test Method ASTM D1557. Asphalt concrete shall be dense, hot-laid, hot mix asphalt plant mixes with a history of satisfactory performance in geographical area where project is located and approved by authorities having jurisdiction. Hot-mix asphalt paving materials, workmanship and other requirements shall be in accordance with the state standard specifications or SSPWC. Geotechnical Observation/Testing The geotechnical consultant should perform geotechnical observation and testing to ascertain that conditions corresponds to the findings and conclusions and that construction conform generally to the recommendations presented herein. Limitations The analyses, conclusions and recommendations contained in this report were based using the standard of care and skill ordinarily exercised under similar circumstances by reputable engineers and geologists currently practicing in this or similar localities. No other warranty or representation, either expressed or implied, is included or intended. If you have any questions regarding our report, please do not hesitate to contact this office. We appreciate this opportunity to be of service. Respectfully submitted, MTGL, Inc. FESS Eduardo C.
