The 9 buildings range from 5 to 14 dwelling units per building, and up to 3 stories. The project is located along Cassia Road, west of El Camino Real in the City of Carlsbad. This report herein is to provide a water system analysis to identify the flows required to the buildings, determine meter sizing, and verify system dynamic pressures by conducting a water system model analysis. The criteria used for the analysis is based on the Carlsbad Municipal Water District (CMWD), Uniform Plumbing Code (UPC), and the NFP A standards for sprinkler systems. Demands The demands for the project based on CMWD criteria and are provided below. This method provides the peak flow to each building. Total flow is allowed from two hydrants. Preliminary Estimated Fire Sprinkler Flows Fire sprinkler flow requirements have been estimated based on the NFP A standards, as provided in the following table. Based on the sprinkler flows estimated, 4-inch fire service lines are recommended. Hydraulic Analysis To verify the pipeline and service sizing, a model analysis was performed on the proposed water system. To be conservative, the analysis assumes only two of the three points of connection to the existing system are open. The hydraulic grade at the points of connection is assumed to be 530-feet. (The Zone HGL is 550-ft.) Static pressures in the area range from 121 psi to 131 psi. Three analyses were performed for three conditions: (1) maximum day demands plus hydrant flows, (2) maximum day demands plus the worst case sprinkler flow and hydrant flow, and (3) peak hour demands. For the run (1), the fire flow was conservatively assumed from single hydrant. The run assumed two connections open. The minimum residual pressure is 91 psi. Run (2) assumed the worst case conditions with the maximum sprinkler flow of 1,038 gpm to building 9 with the full hydrant flow to the two hydrants nearest to building 9. The pipeline connection at Drive "C" at Cassia Road is assumed closed. The results yield a pressure of 7 4 psi at the fire line connection to the building, after the fire service meter. The peak hour demands analysis, run (3), conservatively assumes the UPC peak flows to each building due to the small size of the service area. The minimum peak hour pressure at the buildings, after the service meter, was found to be 96 psi. Results of the analysis are provided in the Appendix.
