April 3, 2006(5CS&T 0612093-1). : - Dear Mr. Wright: • In accordance with your request, this report has been prepared to summarize the result of the in-' place density tests performed in the site improvements at the subject site by Southern California Soil and Testing, Inc.. (SCS&T). These tests were performed between May 18, 2006 and June 5, 2007. .' S - : 1. SCOPE OF WORK S I The scope of work performed by our firm and addressed in this report includes I . . In-place density testing of the underground utility trench bakf ills; - S • In-place density testing of basement wall backfill, • In-place density testing of subgrade and base courses 11 UTILITY TRENCH BACKFILLS I - Typically, the soils generated.'from the excavations for the trenches were used as backfill. The, • backfIll material was in 6to 8-inch lifts,moisture conditioned and compacted to at least 90 percent of •, •1 • - maximum dry density. Compaction was achieved primarily by means of an excavator-mounted sheepsfoot compaction wheel and heavy construction equipment. The sewer, water, and electric trench in-place density, tests have been labeled "S," "W", and "E", respectively.. The approximate locations of the trench backfill tests are noted on-Plate No. 1: 1.2. - BASEMENT WALL BACKFILL . .. . Typically, the on-site soils used for the general grading were also used for the basement wall backfill.'The backfill n'Iaterial was placed in 6 to 8-inch lifts, moisture-conditioned and compacted to. a minimum of 90 percent of maximum dry.density. Compaction Was achie,ed primarily Oy means of a hand tamper. The approximate locations of the wall backfill tests are noted on Plate No 1 The retaining wall backfill in-place density tests have been labeled "WB" 1.3. . SUBGRADE AND BASE COURSES Subgrade preparation for the onsite flatwork and excavated trenches on Navrra Drive essentially consisted of moisture conditioning the surf icial soils and compacting them to at least 95 percent of maximum dry density. The subgrade tests have been labeled "SG" and their locations are noted on Plate No. 1. . . . .. . 0 Crushed, aggregate base course was placed ov'er the subgrade on Nayarra Drive. Tests performed by our field representative indicated relative compaction values 'of at least 95 percent of maximum dry density Compaction was achieved by means of steel drum vibratory rollers and heavy 'construction equipment The base course tests have been labeled "B" and their locations are noted on Plate No. 1. -S 0" 2. -FIELD OBSERVATIONSAND LABORATORY TESTS i .. - Field 'observations and density tests were performed by a representative of SCS&T during the earthwork The density tests were performed according to ASTM D 2922-05 (nuclear gauge) procedures. The results of the tests are noted on Plate Nos. 2 and 3. The, accuracy of-the in-situ density test locationa and elevations is áfunction of theaccuracy of the survey control provided by other than SCS&T representatives. Unless otherwise noted, their locatiorfs and elevations ,were 'determined by pacing and hand levelmethods and should be considered accurate only to ,the degree implied by the method used. As used herein, the term "observation" implies only that we observed the progress of work we were involvd with, and we also performed field density tests, which in conjunction with our observations, ,,were the base for our opinion as to whether the work was performed in substantial cónfdrmanbe with the geotechnical recommendations and the requirements of the applicable agencies I - Michael.Crëws Development 0 June 22,2007 I .. Matchplay at La Costa SCS& T No. 0612093-2 2523 Navarra Dr., Carlsbad, CA Page 3 I Maximum dry density determinations were performed on representative samples of the soils used in the compacted fills according to ASTM D 1557-02 The results of these tests, presented on Plate No 3, were used in conjunction with the field density,tests to determine the degre6 of relative I ' compaction of the compacted fill 3. CONCLUSIONS : Based on our field observations and the in-place density test results, it is the opinion of SCS&T that the geotechnic'al engineering and engineeripg geology aspects of grading,arein compliance with the I approved referenced geotechnical report, the City of Carlsbad Grading Ordinance, the Grading/Improvement Plan Drawing Number 431-2, and the Uniform Building Code. 1 4.,.,' LIMITATIONS - I This report covers only the services performed between May 18, 2006 and June 5, 2007 Our opinions are based on our observations and therelative compaction test results and are limited by the scope.of the work that we agreed to perform. Our work was performed in accordance with the I currently accepted standard of practice and in such a manner as to frovide a reasonable measure :of the compliance of the backfill operations with the project- requirements'. NO warranty, express or I implied, is made or intended with respect to the work that we have performed, and neither the' performance of this work nor submittal of this report should be construed as relieving the contractor I of its responsibility to conform with the project requirements I Our work was generally performed on an "on-call" basis Therefore, the in place density tests performed by our field representative can only be construed as representative of the areas tested as • 0 shown on the attached plates.
