Subject: Geotechnical Recommendations for Street Sections, La Costa Residential Development
"Montecina", City of Carlsbad, California
In accordance with your request, LGC Geotechnical, Inc. has provided the following geotechnical
recommendations for street sections of the La Costa residential development "Montecina" in Carlsbad,
California. Based on the Traffic Index provided by the project civil engineer, we recommend the following
minimum street sections:
Street Traffic Index Section Alternate Section
Avenida Soria 6 4" AC over 12" AB 6" AC over 8" AB
Circulo Ronda 5 4" AC over 6" AB -
Calle Tarifa 5 4" AC over 6" AB -
Calle Nerja 5 4" AC over 6" AB -
Our recommendations are based on representative "R-Value" testing of 13 (attached).
The recommended thickness of AB should be placed directly on approved subgrade and be compacted to a
minimum relative compaction of 95 percent. The asphalt should also be compacted to a minimum relative
compaction of 95 percent.
The thickness of AC and AB given above are minimum thicknesses. Increasing the thickness of asphalt or
adding additional base material will reduce the likelihood of the pavement experiencing distress during its
service life. The above recommendations are based on the assumption that proper maintenance and irrigation
of the areas adjacent to the roadway will occur throughout the design life of the pavement. Failure to
maintain a proper maintenance and/or irrigation program may jeopardize the integrity of the pavement
