I ,.-,,I s La Cotta Land Company Costa Del Ma Road C&bad, California 92008 .- Subject: Project No. 72-12-5D Final Report on Compacted Filled Ground La Costa Vale Unit No. 2 Carlsbad Tract No. 72-20.2 C&bad, California Gentlemen: This Is to report the results of tests end observationa made in order to inspect the compaction of fflled ground placed on certain wear of La Corta Vale Unit No. 2 in Carlsbal, Colifornlo. The fills were placed during the period between February 8, 1973 and November 18, 1974. The approximate mea end deptha of filled ground placed under our inspection In accordance wlth the approved specifications cre shown on the attached Drawing No. 1, entitled “Location of Compacted Filled Ground.” The grading plol used far the placement of filled ground wm premed by Rick Engineering Company. The approximate locations at which the tests were t&en and the final test resulb QI pesented on pacer T-l and T-24, inclusive, under the “Table of Tat Resulta.” The laboratory dotor- minations of the maximum dry denrities and optimum moisture contents of the major fill matuialr are presented on pqee L-l, under the “L&oratory Tert Rerul h.” Some of the maximum dry densitlti shown in the “Tdale of Test Results” wero combinations of these. It ho been determined that the fill materials, compacted to 90 percent of the maximum dry density, have a safo becring value of 1650 pounds per squcre foot far one foot WI& continuous footings founded at a minimum depth and placed five feet or more lnslde the top of compacted fllled ground slopes. If footings (10 placed closer to the exposed slopes tha-r 5 feet inside the tc,p of compacted filled qound rlopes, those should be deepened one foot below a 1 l/2 horizontal to 1 vertical line prolected out- ward and downward from a polnt 5 feet horlzontally~lnslde the tap of compacted filled ground - dopar. Tests indicate that the compactad filled ground la adequate to ratirfactorily support the proposed one ad two story wood frune dwolllngs wlthout dotrlmental settlemenh. BENTON ENGINELI)INO. Therofore, In order to mlnimlzo possible detrimental effech cwsed by these potentially l xpmsive soils, the following special design end PO- cautions are recommended; 1. Avoid tho use of isolated inhrlor plen. Lbe continuous interconnected rolnforcod concrete footings throughout, and place these at a mfnlmum depth of 24 Inches below the lowest odlocent exterior ftnal ground surf-. Reinforce and interconnect conthutausly with steel has all interior md exterior footings with one i5 ba at 3 inches daovo tho bottom of the footings and one 15 bar placed 1 i/2 inches below the top of the sterns of the footlngr. 3. Raised wooden floors that spcn between continuous footings era best, or use concreta slabs reinforced with at lecnt 6 x 6 - lo/IO welded wire fabric. A minlmum of 4 inches of crushed rock 3/4 to 1 Inch In size should be placed bneath oil concrete sl&s cmd covered with a molstun barrier. Two inches of clean rand rhould then lm plocod over the molshrrr barrier and below the bottom of the slab. 4. Separate garage slabs frarn perimeter footings by o i/2 inch thlcknus of comtruction felt or equivalent, to allow independent movement of gaagl slabs relative to perimetu fcatings. Assure complete separation by oxtend- ing the feft over the full depth of the front thickened edge of the garw slab. Also, cut off the garqe door stops c# leapt i/2 inch abovo the sl&. 5.
