' .- - -, : •, -' This' is, to report the results of tests and observations made in order to inspect the compaction of filled ground placed On certain areas of the Santa Fe Glens subdivision In Carlsbad,' Californló. - Also included arethe results of tests taken In compacted filled ground placed on the adjacent 'school property and on two other areas outside the limits of this subdivision. The fills were: placed during the period between December 20, 1974 and May 28, 1975. '• .. - The approximate areas and depths of filled ground placed under our !nspection'tn accordance, - with the approved specifications are shown on the attached Drawing No. .1, 'entitled "Location of Compacted Filled Ground." The grading: plan used for the placement of filled ground,.dated December '18, 1974, was prepared by Rick Engineering Company. ' - The approximate locations at which the tests were taken and the final test results are presented on pages 5 to 30 , inclusive, under the "Table of Test, Results." The approximate locations at - wh,ich the tests were taken on the school- property are shown on Drawing No. 1'.' The laboratory determinations of the maximum dry densities and optimum moisture contents of the major fill. materials are presented on pages 30 and 31, under the "Laboratory Test Results." S .. xistinl loose or porous upper soils were removed and recompacted to-90 percent of maximum . dry density in shallow cut areas and prior to placing fill in the compacted filled ground areas. Compacted filled ground was placed on a portion of the school property adjacent to Santa Fe Glens and on two ofher'areas adjacent to this subdivision. The approximate locations of these.:.:. . off-site All areas are shown .on Drawing No. 1. . '• . ' 1.Th6:finaU results of tests, and observations indicate that the compacted filled ground has been placed at 90 percent of the maximum dry density or greater. It has been determined that thefill materials, compacted to 90 percent of the maximum dry density, have a safe bearing value of 2000 pounds per square foot for one foot wide continuous footings founded at a minimum depth of one foot below the lowest adjacent compacted ground surface and placed five feet or more inside the top of compacted filled ground slopes. If footings are placed closer-to the exposed slopes than 5 feet inside the top of compacted filled ground slopes, these should be deepenedone foot below a 1 1/2 horizontal to 1 vertical line projected outward and .downward from a point 5 feet horizontally Inside the top of compacted filled ground slopes.. Tests indicate that the compacted filled ground is adequate to satisfactorily support the proposed one and two story.wood frame . dwellings without detrimental settlements. . . . ., . . . Special grOding was' accomplished in certain areas in order to reduce the' expansion potential of the soils in the upper' 1.5 feet below finished grade to' less than critical conditions. ' According to present F.H.A. requirements, the following special design and precautions are recommended for the expansive soil conditions TYPE A LOTS . " ' ' (High Expansion Potential) . 1. Use continuous Interconnected 'reinforced concrete footings throughout, " founded at .18 inches below the lowest adjacent finished ground surface. These are to'be reinforced continuously with a total of four"4 steel bars; , .,, ' ' 2 placed at. 1 1/2 inches below the top of the stern wall Of the, footings ' and 2 placed at 3 inches above the bottom of the footings. 2. . Use a minimum 4 inch thickness reinforced oncrete'stabor a'special ' ' '' structurally designed concrete slab. Reinforce the slab with at least ff3 ' ' , bars at 18 inches center to center or with 6" x 6",by #6fl6 welded wire fabric. 3. Re-establish a moisture content in the upper soils to 12 inches below footing grade to a moisture content at least 3 percent above optimum 0 at a time five days before pouring the concrete to allow, the moisture to uniformly distribute at the time the concrete is poured. If drying weather conditions exist, supplementary moistening to within 24 hours e of the pouring period will be, required. 5. Separate concrete slabs from footings by 1/2 inch construction felt or " ' equivalent to allow movements of the slabs relative to the.footings. At garage door openings construct' vertical timber members to allow for up to 3/4 inch vertical movement of the concrete slabs on grade. ' ' TYPE B LOTS (Moderate Expansion Potential) ' •'• 1. Use the same design as recommended for Type A lots except for the following changes: S S (a), Footings may be placed at a minimum depth of 1 .0 foot below the S final ground surface and should be reinforced with one 04 steel bar , 5 placed 11/2- inches below the top of the stem wall of the footings and one #4 steel bar, placed at 3 inches above the bottom of the S ' ' footings.
