Work Order 100196 Subject: Preliminary Soils Report; Occidental Sewer, from Poinsettia Lane to Proposed Camino de Las Ondas (3600 + lineal feet), in the City of Carlsbad, California. Gentlemen: Pr~sented herewith is a preliminary soil report relative to the. construction of the subject sewer. Information concerning the proposed design of the system was furni~hed by Rick Engineering Company. Sewer profile and plan sheets in addition to a topographic map of the subject area, was received. A plan showing a possible .borrow site (Alta Mira Disposal Area) and a surface water control plan was also received. A plot plan showing the location of the proposed sewer is presented on Plate A. LOCATION AND PROPOSED CONSTRUCTION A .sanitary sewer is proposed extending from the intersection of Poinsettia Lane and Lowder lane (Manhole No. 11) westerly to Interstate 5 and then following the • • • • • • • • • • • June 14, 1973 Work Order 100196 Page 2 easterly ri"ght-of-way of Interstate 5 approximately 2800-feet where. it extends . easterly approximately 480-feet to a downslope terminal (Manho,le No.1). The pipe size varies from eight (8) inch V.C.P. at the higher end to 12-inch V.C.P. at He lower end. The proposed station ing for the sewer system beg ins with Station 1+00 at Manhole. No.1 (the downstream end) and extends to Station 39+00 at Manhole No. 11 (the upstream end). In order to develop the required gradient for the system, it will be necessary to place fill from approximately Station 0+-30 to 25+20. This fill is proposed in the form of a d·ike or levee with an equipment width top ( 15-feet) and side slopes of 4- horizontal tc? 1-vertical on the easterly side of the levee and 2-horiz~ntal to I-vertical on the westerly side (Interstate 5) of the levee. The maximum depth of fill is approximately eight (8) feet. The fill levee shall impede the. surface water and a drainage device consisting of . R.C. P. beneath the levee and rock revetment at the inlet and outlet. Th is is proposed in the vicinity of Station 5+00. , No appreciable. fill will be generated from the construction of the sewer system. It will be ne~essary to borrow material from a nearby source to make the' proposed . levee fill. PACIFIC SOILS ENGINEERING, INC. • • • • • • • • • • • June 14, 1973 Work Order 100196 SITE COND ITIONS Page 3' The soils onsite generally consist of clayey and silty sands. These materials are the result of marine terrace deposits and may vary from loose to very dense. The soils that are anticipated in the trench excavations should be' moderately dense in nature. Vegetal cover exists next to Interstate 5 where the ,levee fill is proposed. The'area easterly and superjacent to the proposed alignment has been used for agricultural purposes. In addition, the natural flow of surface water has deposited silt and loose surface' materials in the area next to Interstate 5. These materials are predominate between Station 5+00 to 13+00. The proposed borrow area is a previously graded side h'i" fill. The fill w~s placed , with side slopes of 4-horizontal to 1-vertical. The material appears to be suitable for use as levee fill for the sewer construction. PACIFIC SOILS ENGINEERING, INC. • • • ., • • • • • • June 14, 1973 Work Order 100196 Page 4' CONCLUSIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS Based ypon the limited field investigation,. laboratory analysis and engineering analyses, , the following conclusions and recommendations are presented:. 1. 2. \ The development of the sewer along the proposed a.lignment appeqrs to be acceptable from a soil engineering view point. Grading and placement of compacted fill will be nece$sary to provide the required sewer gradient. In order to prevent pos$ible settlement of the sewer pipe in the fill . area, it will be necessary to use the following procedures in the placement of compacted fi II. a. Strip the area of all vegetal cover or organic materials. b. Remove the loose upper surface soils that are the resuit of recent alluvial deposits. Removals on the order of one (1) to two (2) feet may be necessary in the area from Station 5+00.to 13+00. The actual depth of removal should be determined in the field by the soil engineer's representative. c. After all removal has been completed, the areas to receive fiU shall be processed and compacted to a minimum of 90 perc;:ent to a depth of 12-inches. PACIFIC:: SOILS ENGINEERING, INC. e e e • • e • • e· .. • • June 14, 1973 Work Order ·100196 '. Page 5 Fi.lJshould be spread in thin lifts, moistened or dried as necessary to hear optimum moisture conditions and compacted to a minimum of 90 percent of the laboratory standard (ASTM:D 1557, modified to three (3) Jayers). This includes trench backfil-I over the pipe. e. The loose materials overexcavated may be reused as compacted fill provided it is free of organic matter. f. All removal, processing of naturaJ ground, placement of compacted I fill and placement of trench backfill, should be done under the inspection and testing services of a soilserigineer in accordance with the criteria set forth by the City of Carlsbad. 3. The fill should be brought to its proposed final grade prior to the excavation and placement of the sewer pipe. 4. The levee slopes are programmed at ratios of 4-h6rizontal to l-vertical and 2-horizontal-to 1-verHcal ~ These ratios are considered suitable for the anticipated soils to be used as fill and forthe minor slope heights. Afte~ the completion of construction, the slope areas should be surface rolled by equipment to reduce erosion. PACIFIC SOILS ENGI",EERING, INC. • • • • • . , • • • • '~' • • , June .14", 1,973 Work Order 100196 Page, 6 5. , Groundwater is not qnticipated at ~he depth of excavation proposed. If the 'adjacent field is irrigated during construction, surface water could be a nuisance. 6. Trench excavations in natural ground or compacted fill may be made vertical \ ' to a depth of five (5) feet in accordance with the State ,of. California, Division of Industrial Safety cri'teria for hard ground. Trenches deeper than five (5) feet should be sloped back or shored in accordance with their criteria. 7 • Provided the previous grading recommendations are followed, t~e proposed fill w.ill be competent to support the sewer pipe and future fill without adverse settlement. 'fhe placement of additional fil·1 over five (5) feet in , depth over the sewer, in the future, should be reviewed by a soil engineer. s. the upper soils in the general vicinity of the sewer would appear to ~ s!)itable for use as compacted fill in the proposed I~vee as long as th,eyare free of organic material and not highly expans, ive cI~y. The disposal area for Alta Mira Unit No.2 has been proposed asa possible . --b~rrow site. This area appears to be very well ,suited as the soils are goad and' . grading or removal can be accomplished from the top of the comp~cted area in a manner that the final drainage pattern does not appreciably change.
