SURVEY METHODS .
A crew of three surveyed the Agua Hedionda projec·t·
area. The project was surveyed by mean$ of a closely
controlled, on-foot reconnaissance throughout the entire
property. Individual crew members traversed specific
portions of the site in an established pattern of over-·
lapping grids. When the general survey was completed,
the· crew then returned to the area where artifacts had
been found. The purpose of this secondary reconnaissance
was to define the extent of the site and to determine the
information potential represented by it.
Because of this strictly controlled, on-foot surveying,
it was determined that the entire project area was adequately
covered. As a.result of implementation of such field
methods, this method of surveying was sufficient in defining
the archaeological resources of the project area.
ARCHAEOLOGICAL RESOURCES AND
CONSTRUCTION IMPACT
A record search of files at the San Diego Museum of
Man and San Diego State University disclosed no previously
recorded sites on the project area. The Museum of Man. has
recorded two sites within the immediate vicinity 0.£ the
property. The records indicate that site W-136, primarily
a La Jolla II site, is located along the 300-foot line
approximately a quarter of a mile to the north of the
property. Site W-137 is primarily a Luiseno s'ite and is
located near the 200-foot line approximately a quarter of a .
: j
i
, ,e
'.
mile northwest of the property. The records at San Pie~o
State University indicate that a site, SDi-631, is also
located-on the plateau north of the property. It is
possible that this site is the same as W-136 from the
Museum of Man files (Fig. 2).
Only one site was located on the property during the
course of the survey. This site is situated approximately
on the 280-foot line on the slope leading up to the plateau
which comprises the eastern half of the property (Fig. 2).
This site was characterized solely by two flaked tools,
a cortex-based domed scraper and a pebble chopper (Fig. 3).
These two artifacts were located within approximately fifty
feet of each other. Both artifacts are typical of the
La Jolla culture; their presence indicates that this area
was probably used as a temporary location for food prepar-
ation. No projectile points, shell beads, pottery, or
grinding implements were found throughout the course'of the
survey. No cultural midden is present on the site where the
two artifacts were encountered. Due to the sparsity of '
artifacts of this site, which indicate temporary occupation,
as well as the incline of the slope, it is doubtful that
any cultural midden ever existed.
MITIGATING ACTION
Because of the relatively sparse and scattered artifact
distribution, the absence of cultural mroden, and the possi-e bility that this site may'have been dist.1lllrbed,by local relic
• .'
collectors, further mitigating action is not necessary.
The construction of the proposed project will not endanger,
'impair or destroy any known archaeological resources. Any
attempt at additional mitigating action could contribute
no further information to the a~chaeological record; hence
none is recommended.
Both artifacts found, the cortex-based, domed scraper
and the pebble chopper, were collected for the possibility
that further research be undertaken on such problems as
typology or materials, for example.
As is always the case with a surface reconnaissance,
there is a remote possibility that some subsurface cultural,
or paleontological material may be discovered during the
course of construction. If such a development should arise,
it is suggested that a qualified archaeologist be notified
in order that professional evaluation may be carried out.

I. GENERAL INFORMATION
: ....
A preliminary soil report has been completed for the above
mentioned subdivision legally described as 'a Portion of Lot J,
Rancho Agua Hedionda, Map No. 823, City of Carlsbad, County of
San'Diego, State of California. The site is located easterly of
the S. D. G. and E. powerlines at the easterly end of the existing
Chestnut street, Carlsbad.
It is understood the site is to be subdivided into 262 lots
for one and two story wood frame residential dwellings. The
.' foundations will ,use ,continuous -concrete-footings wi th,',concrete

slabs-on-grade. Final details of the structures or grading were
not available at the writing of this .:eport.' .
PURPOSE OF INVESTIGATION
The purpose of the investigation was to determine the, following:
1 the engineering characteristics of the native soils and
proposed fills,
2 -the nature of the proposed cut and fill slopes,
3 -tho prooonce and nature of any expaneive soil,
4 the allowable soil bearing pressures,
5 any obvious geologic hazards; and ~
6 -to make appropriate founda'tion 'recommendations in an
engineering report.
III. FIELD INVESTIGATION
A. 'Surface Conditions

The eastern portion of the site consists of a smooth broad north-
south trending ridge which is capped with a granular material~
West of this ridge at a lower elevation are encountered clayey ~oils
which manifest a different vegetation and sharper topography. A
spring is located west of Test Pit 13 which probably represents a
buried drainage outlet for the water which has penetrated the uppe~
granular formation and is held at the springline by the impervious
clay strata below. The adjacent ravines at approximately springline
may also "bleed" during the wet seasons. The presence of water for
several feet above the clay ,strata is veri~:i~d_ ,b,y "~o:t'~n,,~,s:;,,.J,:~,'1.~';;j:~~~~~~":~;~t.r:r:::!':

B. Test Pits and Borings
Twenty-six exploratory test pits were dug With a backhoe on
22, 26, 27, 28 and 29 Ju~y 1976. Five deep borings Were also made'
on 2 August 1976 with a bucket drill rig to verify the soil profile
and horizontal bedding near final grade in areas deep c~t. The

C. Subsurface Conditions
The site is underlain by horizontally bedded marine ~~dimentary
deposits of the La Jolla formation of Eoce~e Age. There were no
faults, landslides or other obvious geologic hazards observed during
the investigation. The nearest known active fault is the Elsinore
fault approximately 24 miles to the northeast. Other possible'active
faults include the Rose Canyon fault, 20 miles to the south, and a
theorized offshore fault conneqting with the active Newport-Ingl~wood
fault system to the north.

There was some compressible soils in the bottom of the ravines which
will be excavated and recompacted during grading as discussed in·.··-.,

drains will be installed in the ravine bottoms to divert the ground-.
water from the springs.
In general the soil profile consists of approximately 40 feet
of sandy material, measured from the top of the ridge in the eastern.
portion of the site, which grades to a basal conglomerate for several

2 Density Tests
Density and natural moisture determinations were made on
thirty six undisturbed samples. The samples were coated with
paraffin and density measurements ~ade by the water di,splacement
method. Four field density tests were also taken to determine
the natural conditions of moisture and density., The-tests were
performed according to ASTM 01556-64, tne sand cone method.
The ratio of the field dry density to, the laboratory maximum'
dry density is defined as the relative compaction. These re-

It is felt that the main slope pr~blem will be the cut slopes
in the Soil Type 7, the Light Green Sandy Clay with limeo Since
the lime streaks represent fractUre zones, care should be taken
to recompact these areas when found near buildings. Care must also
be taken to remove all the dry cracked topsoil, Soil,Type 6, by
benching prior to starting a new fill. All benches should be inspected
and approved by a qualified soil technician in the field prior to
filling.

SPECIfICATIONS fOR CONSTRUCTION Of CONTROLLED fILLS
GENERAL DESCRIPTION: The construction of controlled fills shall consist
of adequate preliminary soil investigations, and clearing, removal of
existing structures and foundations, preparation of land to be filled,.
excavation of earth and rock from cut area, compaction and cont~ol of
the fill, and all other work necessary to complete the grading of the
filled areas to conform with the lines, grades, and slopes as shQwn on
the accepted plans.
CLEARING AND PREPARATION OF AREAS TO BE fILLED:
(a) All fill control projects shall have a preliminary soil investigation
'or a visual examination, depending upon the nature of the job, by a qual-
ified soil engineer prior to grading.

. drainage or removal of compressible material, or both, to ~he depths in~
dicated on the plans or as directed by the soil engineer.
(d) The natural ground which is determined to be satisfacto~y for the
support of the filled ground shall then be plowed or scarified to a depth
of at least six inches (6") or deeper as specified by the soil engineer,
and until the surface is free from ruts, hummocks, or other uneven fea-'
tures which would tend to prevent uni form compaction by the equipment' to
be used.

(i) The cut portions of building pads in which rock-like.material exists
may require excavation and recompaction for denBity compatibility with
the fill as directed by the soil engineer.
MATERIALS: The fill soils shall consist of select materials graded so
that at least 40 percent of the material passes the No. 4.sieve. The
material may be obtained from the excavation, a borrow pit, or by mixing
soils from one or more sources. The 'material used shall be free from
vegetable matter, and other deleterious substances, and shall not contain
rocks or lumps greater than 6 inches in diameter. If excessive vegetation,
rocks, or soils with unacceptable physical characteristics are encountered,
these materials shall be disposed of in waste areas designated on the plans
or as directeq by the soil engineer. If soils are encountered during the
grading operation which were not reported in the preliminary soil invest-
igation, further testing will be required to ascertain their engineering
properties. Any special treatment recommended in the preliminary or sub-
sequent soil reports not covered herein shall become an addendUm to th~se
specifications.
