Different methods of compaction were employed in the trench backfill operation to achieve the required compaction such as: wheel rolling with a tractor or a loader, backhoe mounted vibrating plate (Hoe-pat), and a hand trench packer. All three methods were successful in the recompaction of the trench backfills when the moisture content of the soil exceeded the optimum moisture for each soil type. Project: NSD 983 1 Date May 198; Density tests were performed at various depths in backfill soils for verification of moisture content and dry density. As indicated on the Compaction Test Data Enclosures, compaction of' the backfill materials met or exceeded 90% of the Maximum Dry Density as determined by ASTM Test Procedure D-1557-70. In the case of failing density tests, the contractors were informed of the areas that required additlonal compactive effort. All failing areas of the trench backfills were reworked and retested until a 90% relative compaction was achieved. All density tests taken in the various trench backfills for the subject project were performed in accordance with the City of Carlsbad requirements and accepted engineering practices.
