LIBRARY Ctfy of Carlsbad 257'5 Las Palmas Drive Carlsoad, CA 92009-4859 AIRPORT BUSINESS CENTER - PHASE I CARLSBAD, CALIFORNIA -----------_--------------------- This letter presents the results of geotechnical tests and observations performed during various phases of work associated with the construction of improvements within Unit I of the Airport Business Center in Carlsbad, California. The phases of work observed and/or tested included: 0 Backfilling of utility lines within streets and lots. e Subgrade preparation and compaction. Baserock placement and compaction. Asphalt Concrete placement and compaction; Utility trench backfills tested included storm drain, water, common trench (electric, gas, telephone) and sewer. Imported granular material was placed within the pipe zone of the sewer and storm drain trenches and within the lower portion of the common trench. The remaining backfills consisted of on-site soils, which were placed in lifts, moisture conditioned and compacted. Compaction equipment used included: 1) a large track mounted backhoe with a sheepsfoot attachment on the boom, 2) a vibrating sheepsfoot, 3) large pneumatic wheeled compaction equipment, 4) hand operated mechanical compactors, 5) steel wheel rollers, and 6) Hydro-hammer. MOORE & TABER GEOTECHNICAL mGlNEms m0 GEOLOGISTS Centre Development Page 2 The maximum dry density and optimum moisture content of the representative soils and aggregate base material were determined in the laboratory by ASTM Test Method D1557 and California Impact Test 216-F, respectively. The results of the compaction curves are presented in Table III. Eight hundred thirty one (831) relative compaction tests were obtained from the trench backfills, subgrade soils, baserock and paving during the subject installations. The tests were taken at random depths and/or locations. The test samples were obtained by the drive cylinder, sand volume and nuclear gauge methods as described in ASTM publications. Testing of utility trenches was supplemented by probing those areas not tested to determine similarity in compaction. Results of the tests are given in Table I and II, and their locations are shown on the attached drawing. Based on our tests and observations, we conclude that the utility trench backfills tested have been compacted to a minimum of 90 percent of maximum density, and that the street subgrade and aggregate base/paving have been compacted to at least 90 and 95 percent relative compaction respectively, where shown on the attached drawing. The thickness, temperatures and.density of the A.C. pavement was monitored during placement to determine com- pliance with the specifications. This report has been prepared in accordance with generally accepted geotechnical practices and makes no other warranties, either express or implied, as to the professional advice or data included.
