Updated Geotechnical Investigation, Lake Calavera Hills, Village G, Prepared by Southern California'Soil & Testing, Inc., dated April 26, 1983. In accordance with your request, this report has been prepared to present the results of the field observations and relative compaction tests per- formed at the subject site by Southern California Soil & Testin'g, Inc. These services were performed between June 2 and July 26,'198~ • SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA SOIL AND TESTING, INC. • • • • • • • • • • SCS&T 14143 August 5, 1983 Page 2 SITE DESCRIPTION The subject site is an irregular shaped parcel of land that is situated in the Calavera Hills area of Carlsbad, Cal ifornia. Topographica'lly, this site is dominated by two relatively large drainage swales which run in a general southwesterly di recti on. El evati ons were noted to vary from approximately 325 feet (t4SL) adjacent to Tamarack Avenue to 200 in the previously mentioned canyon areas. Vegetation at this site consisted of a 1 i ght to moderate growth of grasses and brush except in the canyon areas where the ground cover was dense. This site is surrounded by both devel- oped and undeveloped residential property. PROPOSED CONSTRUCTION One hundred and eight single family residential units are proposed at this site. It is our understanding that these units will consist of one and/or two story, wood-framed duplex structures. Structu ra 1 loadi ng conditi ons resulting from these buildings will be low. AVALIABLE PLANS To assist in determining the locations and elevations of our field density tests and to define the general extent of the site grading for this' phase of work, we were provided with a grading plan prepared by Rick Engineering Company. A copy of this plan is on file at our office which shows the locations of our in-place density tests. SITE PREPARATION Prior to grading, the areas to be filled were cleared of debris and vegeta- tion. The alluvial soils in the canyons were removed to firm natural ground and stockpiled for future use. Subdrains were then installed as SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA SOIL AND TESTING. INC. ,I • • • • • • • .. • • SCS&T 14143 August 5, 1983 Page 3 shown in the referenced reports and at the app roxi mate 1 ocat ions shown on the approved plans. The canyons were then backfilled to the desired finished grades. Benches and keys were established into the competent formatioal soils to support the new fills. Oversized rocks were used in the deeper fills in accordance with our previously outlined recofl1n~nda tions. All clayey expansive soils were kept at least three feet from finished grade, thus, allowing the use of conventional foundational sys- tems. The fill material which consisted of silty sands and fractured rock ob- tained from cuts made on the site were placed in six (6) to eight (8) inch layers, watered to near optimum moisture requirements and was compacted by means of a sheepsfoot roller and heavy construction equipment. The density tests were taken according to A.S.T .t4. Test 1556-74 and the results of those tests are shown on the attached plates. The locations and elevations of the in-situ tests were deter'mined in accor- dance with their importance and the accuracy and proximity of the survey SOUTHERN CALIF"ORNIA SOIL AND TESTING. INC. Unless otherwise noted, their locations and elevations were determined by pacing and hand level methods and should be considered accurate only to the degree implied by the method used. As used herein, the term lI observation" implies only that we observed the progress of work we agreed to be i nvol ved with, and performed tests, on whi ch, together, we based our op; ni on as to whether the work .essent i a l1y complies with the job requirements, local grading ordinances and the Uniform Building Code. LABORATORY TESTS r·1aximum dry density determinations were performed on representative sam- ples of the soils used in the compacted fills according to A.S.T.H Test 1557-78, Method A. This method specifies that a four (4) inch diameter cylindrical mold of 1/30 cubic foot volume be uS,ed and that the soil tested be placed in five (5) equal layers with each layer compacted by twenty-five (25) blows of a 10 pound hammer with an 18 inch drop. The results of these tests, as presented on Plate Number 1, were used in conjunction with the field density tests to determine the degree of "rela- tive compaction of the compacted fill. CONCLUSIONS Based on field observations and the density test results, it is the 9pin-" ion of Southern Cal ifornia Soil and Testing, Inc. that the grading was performed basically in accordance with the recorrmendations contained in the referenced reports, and the recorrmendations contained there-in do apply to the subject site. This report covers only the work performed between June 2 and July 26, 1983.
