Gentlemen: In accordance with your request, we herewith present the results of our earthpackage investigation for the subject project. The purpose of thts- study is to determine areas requiring special grading consideration as well as to provide estimated quantities of various soils existing on the site. Conclusions - 1) Soils encountered during our investigation consist of topsoil, allu- vium, hypabyssal rock and Santiago Formation deposits. 2) Highly expansive topsoils cap the majority of the site to a depth of 2.0± feet. Highly expansive alluvial deposits exist at the bottom of the low lying canyon areas. It is estimated that the alluvium is fairly shallow (2± feet average thickness). For the purposes of this report, the alluvium was considered as topsoil. It is' recommended that topsoil s and all u vi um be removed beneath a 11 areas to recei ve fill and/or structural loads. Plate Number 2 apprOXimately delineates the area where this condition exists. In addition, due to their high expansive potential, topsoils and alluvium utilized in structural fill should not be placed within 2.5 feet of finished grade or within five feet from the face of slopes. They may be placed behind the buttress as shown on Plate Number 25. It is estimated that 30,000 cubic yards of topsoil and a 11 uvi um will requi re removal from the areas to recei ye fill. Further it is estimated that 35,000 cubic yards of tops,oils will be generated during cutting operations elsewhere on site. 3) In the area along Tamarack Avenue where the hypabyssal rock wi 11 be encountered, weathered and rippable materials will be found at depths from about 5 to 8 feet below the surface. Non rippable rock requi ring blasting will propably be encountered below the 5 to 8 foot levels. It is anticipated that 11,500 cubic yards of rock be generated duri.ng grading. This rock may be placed in the major canyon fill in the rock disposal areas as designated' on Plate Number 2 and in accordance with the rock fill specifications as developed by Woodward-Clyde. This rock fill should be blended with select soils at a ratio of not less than 4'0% select, 60% rock. 4) Santiago Formation deposits underlying the site were divided as to nondetrimental and highly expansfve soils. Estimated quantities generated from cut areas excluding topsoil and alluvium are: a) b) Nondetrimentally expansive soils: Highly expansive soils: 134,000 cubic yards 14,000 cubic yards It should be noted that soil s exposed inTrench 12 were descri bed as silty sands with some minor pockets of highly expansive clays. Field determinations in this area will have to be made during earthwork operations to ascertain if capping is to be required. Santiago Formation deposits are characterized by isolated random claystone layers with highly expansive potential. However, due to their randomness it is impossible to determine the location of all of these pockets and therefore additional zones of highly expansive soils may be encountered during mass grading. 5) Areas expected to expose highly expansive soil at final grade eleva- tion (or within 2.5 feet of final grade) are identified in Plate Number 2. It is recommended that sai d areas be capped with 2.5 feet of nondetrimentally expansive material, an estimated 5,300 cubic yards of select fill will be required to complete this work. An additional 13,000 cubic yards of select soil will be required to cap all fill lots. 6) The soil to rock contact that exists along the slope west of Tamarack Avenue wi 11 probably be exposed at or near the top of the cut slope. INC. • • • • • • • • • • • SCS&T 14143 March 23, 1983 P.age 4 Where thi s contact is present withi n 10 feet from the top of the cut slope, we recommend that a buttress be placed as shown in sections B-BI and C-C 1 • The purpose of this buttress ;s to minimize the poten- tial of slope failures from slivers of soil over steeply sloping rock surfaces. It should be realized that the dimension and extent of this buttress may change when earthwork cOl11Tlences and the extent of the soil to rock contact is exactly defined. The buttress will require about 4,000 yards of select material and will generate about 850 cubic yards of rock. 7) It is estimated that 1,400 linear feet of subsurface draining will be required at the approximate locations shown on Plate Number 1. A subdrain detail ;s provided in Plate Number 26. 8} In order to construct the fill slopes as designated on Plate Number 25,37,700 cubic yards of select soils will be required • . Due to the inherent uncertai nti es of subsurface geotechni cal exp 1 orati ons and the specific characteristics of the subject site, the earthwork vol- umes as well as soil mapping provided in this report are approximate and intended for budgeting purposes only. The fi ndi ngs of thi s report, i ndi cate that the recommendations contai ned in the Woodward-Clyde report are valid and should be complied with. The soil engineer and engineer- ing geologist should review and verify the Gompliance of the final grading plan with this report and with Chapter 70 of the Uniform Building Code. It is recommended that the soil and foundat; on eng; neer be retai ned to provide continuous soil engineering services during the earthwork opera- tions. This is to observe compliance with the design concepts, specifica- tions or recommendations and to allow design changes in the event that subsurface conditions differ from those anticipated prior to start of constructi on • UNIFORMITY OF CONDITIONS The recommendations and opinions expressed in this report reflect our best estimate of the project requirements based on an evaluation of the subsur- face soil conditions encountered at the subsurface exploration locations and the assumption that the soil conditions do not deviate appreciably from those encountered. It shoul d be recogni zed that the performance of the foundations and/or cut and fill slopes may be influenced by undis- closed or unforeseen variations in the soil conditions that may occur in the intermediate and unexplored areas. Any unusual conditions not covered in this report that may be encountered during site development should be brought to the attention of the soils engineer so that he may make modifi- cations if necessary • .' Changes in the condition of a property can, however, occur with the passage of time, whether they be due to natu ra 1 processes or the work of man on thi s or adjacent properties. In addition, changes in the State-of-the-Art and/or Government Codes may occur. Due to such changes, the findings of this report may be inval i dated wholly or in part by changes beyond o.ur control. Therefore, this report should not be relied upon after a period of two years without a review by us verifying the suitability of the conclusions and recommendations. CLIENT'S RESPONSIBILITY It is the responsibility of Pacific Scenes, Inc. or their representative to ensure that the information arid recommendations contained herein are brought to the attention of the engineer and architect for the project and incorporated into the project's plans and specifications. It is further his responsibility to take the necessary measures to ensure that the contractor and thei r subcontractors carry out such recoll1T1end'ati ons du ri ng construction. FIELD EXPLORATIONS Twenty-four subsurface explorations were made 'at the locations indicated on the attached Plate Number 1 on March 10, 13 and 21, 1983. These explo- rati ons consisted of 22 trenches excavated util i zi ng a rubber-ti red back- hoe equipped with a 24-inch bucket and 2 small diameter borings. In addition, two seismic traverse lines were performed. The field work was conducted under the observation of our engineering geology personnel. The explorations were carefully logged when made. These logs are pre- sented on the following Plate Number 8 through 24. The soils are des- cribed in accordance with the Unified Soils Classification System as illustrated on the attached simplified chart on Plate 7. In addition, a verbal textural description, the wet color, the apparent moisture, and the density or consistency are given on the logs. Soil densities for granu,lar soils was given as either very loose, loose, medium dense, dense, or very dense. LABORATORY TESTING Laboratory tests were performed in accordance wi th the genera lly accepted American Society for Testing and Materials (A.S.T.M.) test methods or suggested procedures. A brief description of the tests performed are presented below: a) MOISTURE-DENSITY: Field moisture content and dry density were determined for each undisturbed sa·mple obtained •. This informa- tion was an aid to classification and permitted recognition of variations in material consistency with depth. The dry unit weight is determined in pounds per cubic foot, and the field moisture content is determined as a percentage of the soil's dry weight. The results are summarized in the trench logs. b) CLASSIFICATION: Field classifications were verified in the c) laboratory by visual examination. The final soil classifications are in accordance with the Unified Soil Classification System. GRAIN SIZE DISTRIBUTION: The grain size determined for representative samples of the accordance with A.S. INC. • • • • • • • • • • • SCS&T 14143 March 23, 1983 Appendix A, Page 5 e) DIRECT SHEAR TESTS: Oi rect shear tests were performed to deter- mine the failure envelope based on yield shear strength. The shear box was designed to accomodate a sample having a diameter of 2.375 inches or 2.50 inches and a height of 1.0 inch. Samples were tested at different vertical loads and at saturated moisture content. The shear stress was appl ied at a constant rate of strain of approximately 0.05 inches per minute. The results of these tests are presented on attached Plate Number 22 • f) COMPACTION TEST: The maxi mum dry density and opti mum rnoi stu re c.ontent of typi cal soil s were determi ned in the 1 aboratory in accordance with A.S.T.M. Standard Test 0-1557-70, Method A. The minimum density was also determined for each samp.le tested for maximum density. The test was performed in accordance with A.S.T.M. Test 0-2409. The results of these tests are presented on the following Plate Number 22 • e) EXPANSION TEST: The expansive. potential of clayey soils was determined. in accordance with the following test procedure and the results of these tests appear on Plate Number 23 • Allow the trimmed, undisturbed or remolded sample to air dry to a constant mo; stu re content, at a temperatu re of 100 degrees F. Place the dried sample in the consolidometer and allow to compress under a load of 150 psf. " --"{' • • • • • • • • • • • SCS&T 14143 March 23, 1983 Appendix A, Page 6 RIPPABILITY STUDY RIPPABILITY CHARACTERISTICS OF HYPABYSSAL ROCKS Ri.ppable Condition (0-4,500 Ft.jSec.): Thi s velocity range i ndi cates -rippable materi a 1 s whi ch may vary from decomposed metavol cani cs at lower velocities to only slightly decomposed, fractured rock at the higher velocities. Although rippable, materials may be produced by excavation that will not be useable in structural fills due to a lack of fines. Experience has shown that material within the range of 4,000 to 4,500 fps most often consists of severely to moderately fractured rock with little or no fines and sizeable quantities of + 1/4" material. For velocities between 3,500 to 4,500 fps, rippability will be difficult for backhoes and light trenching equipment • Marginally Rippable Condition (4,500 -5,500 Ft.jSec.): Excavations in this velocity range would be extremely time consuming and would produce fractured rock with little or no fines. The higher velocities could require blasting. Trenching equipment would not function. Nonrippable Condition (5,500 Ft.jSec. & Greater): This velocity range may include moderately to slightly fractured rock which would r~quire blasting for removal. Material produced would consist of a high percentage of oversize and angular rock. Rippability of metavolcanics could be accomplished for higher velocities usin~.the Caterpillar 0-9 with the #9 0 Series Ripper. For trenching, materials with velocities less than 4000 fps are generally rippable, depending on the degree of fracturing and the presence or ab- sence of boul ders. SEISMIC TRAVERSE LIMITATIONS The results of the, seismic survey for this investigation reflect rippabil- ity conditi ons only for the areas of the traverses. The seismic refraction method requires that materials become increasingly dense with depth. In areas where denser, higher velocity materials are underlain by lower velocity materials, the lower velocity materials would not be i ndi cated by ou r su rvey.
