SCS&T 14181, 3900 Harney 0 Report No.. 2 San Diego, California 9.2110 SUBJECT: Report of In-Place Density Tests, Lake Calavera Hills, Village C and D, Unit No. 2 Models, Lot Nos. 219-224, Carlsbad, California. REFERENCE: 1.)-.Preliminary Geotechnical Investigation for the Proposed Lake - Calavera Hills Units C and D, Prepared by Woodward-Clyde Consultants, dated June '30, 1980.. - 2..) Earthpackage Investigation, Carlsbad Tract 81-47, Prepared -by Woodward-Clyde Consultants, dated July 27, 1982. Gentlemen-: In accordance with your request, this report has been prepared to present the results of the in-place density tests performed on the prepared natural ground and compacted fills at the subject site by Southern. California Soil & Testing, Inc. These tests were performed between May 24 and July 12, 1983. AVAILABLE PLANS To assist in determining the locations and elevations of our filed density tests and to define the general extent of the site grading for this phase of work, we were provided with a grading plan prepared by Rick Engineering. SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA SOIL AND TESTING, INC1 )j;2v.7 SCS&T 14181 July 15, 1983 , Page Two SITE PREPARATION Prior to grading the areas to be filled were cleared of debris and vegetation. The loose alluvial soils in the canyon areas and topsoils were removed to firm natural ground. Subdrains were then installed in the approximate locations shown on the approved grading plans. The alluvial 'clean-outs and subdrain installations were examined by representatives of this office' prior to backfilling. Benchs and keys were then established in' the existing hill- sides in order to support the' new fill soil's. The previously removed soils and materials generated by the on-site cuts were then placed, watered and compacted with heavy construction equipment. These grading operations were performed by Chilcote, Inc. FIELD TESTING Field density tests were perfomed by a representative of Southern California Soil & Testing, Inc. The density tests were taken according to A.S.T.M. Test .1556-74 and the location and results of those tests are shown' on the attached plates. The locations and elevations of the in-situ tests were determined in accordancewith their importance and the accuracy and proximity 'of ,the survey' control provided by other than Southern California Soil & Testing, Inc. represe'ntative. Unless otherwise noted, their locations and elevations Were determined by pacing and hand level methods and should be considered accurate only to the degree implied by the method used. LABORATORY TESTS Maximum dry density determinations were performed on representative samples of the soils used in the compacted fills according to A.S.T.M. Test 1557-78, Method A. This method specifies that a four (4) inch diameter cylindrical mold of 1/30 cubic foot volume be used and that the soil tested be placed in five' (5) equal layers with each layer compacted'by twenty-five blows of a 10 pound hammer with a 18 inch drop. The results of these tests, as presented on Plate Number 1, were used in conjunction with the field density SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA SOIL A'ND TESTING, INC. SCS&T 14181 . July 15, 1983 . Page Three tests 'to determine the percent of relative compaction .of the compacted fill. CONCLUSIONS Based on the results of our field testing and observations services, it is our opinion that this portion of the site has been graded substantially in accordance with local grading ordinances and the recommendations contained in the referenced reports. This report covers only the work performed between May 24 and July 12, 1983. Additional testing will be required for the remaining areas of this site which is to receive additional fills. Our opinions presented herein are based on our observations and the relative compaction tests results. As limited by the scope of the services which we agreed, to perform, our opinions presented herein are based on our observations's and the relative compaction test results. Our work was performed in accordance with the currently accepted standards of practice and in such a manner as to provide a reasonable measure Of the compliance-of the mass gradingoperations with the job requirements.'
