SUPPLEMENTARY GEOTECHNICAL INVESTIGATION CALAVERA HILLS SUBDIVISION CARLSBAD, CALIFORNIA INTRODUCTION ANO SCOPE OF SERVICE This investigation was performed to provide additional geotechnical infor- mation regarding specific areas of the project and its intent was to supplement our January 6, 1983 "Report of Preliminary Geotechnical Inves- tigation for the Calavera Hills Subdivision, Areas El, E2, H, I, K and P through 22". The additional areas of concern were determined after review- ing a set of preliminary development plans prepared by Dale Naegle FAIA, dated June 1983. In addition, a seismic survey was performed on areas designated by the client. The scope of our supplementary investigation consisted of: surface recon- naissance; seismic refraction survey, subsurface explorations, obtaining representative disturbed and undisturbed samples; laboratory testing; analysis of the field and laboratory data; and preparation of this report. Specifically, the intent of this analysis was to: a) Explore the subsurface conditions to the depths influenced by the proposed construction. SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA e 0 I L AND TESTINE. I N 0. SCS8T 14112 July 29, 1983 Page 2 b ) Evaluate the rippability characteristics of metavolcanic and granitic rock underlying key areas designated by the client. cl Provide design information regarding the stability of cut and fill slopes proposed for Villages H and I. FINDINGS GENERAL The additional field explorations were concentrated in Villages H, I and the central-western section of Village X. Soils encountered in Villages H and I consisted of Santiago Formation deposits and minor terrace and older alluvium deposits. The Santiago Formation soils consist of silty sands randomly interbedded with claystones and siltstones, particularly above elevation 25Ot- feet MSL. The terrace and older alluvium deposits are minor and consist of sandy clays and clayey sands. The intent of the trenches extended in Village X was to further define the contact between the alluvium and the underlying rock in an area where deep cuts were anticipated. The contact was found to be farther south than previously thought. Therefore, blasting will be necessary to construct the proposed cut slopes. SEISNIC SURVEY In general, the additional seismic traverses confirm the findings of our previous seismic survey. Areas predominantly underlain by metavolcanic rock presented nonrippable material at shallow depths (shallowest at three feet), whereas nonrippable material in areas underlain by predominant granitic rock was encountered deeper (shallowest at 11 feet). A variable zone of marginally rippable rock usually exists between the rippable and nonrippable rock. In this survey, this zone ranged from 3t feet to at SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA 501L AND TESTING. INC SCS&T 14112 July 29, 1983 Page 3 least 2% feet in the metavolcanic rock and 5-t feet to l& feet in the granitic rock. The exception to our previous findings was ST 19 in which a deep layer at least 25 feet deep of marginally rippable material was encountered in an area underlain by metavolcanic rock. A summary of our seismic traverses is presented herein and on Plates Numbers 27 and 28. The interpretation is based on the rippability chart provided on Plate Number 29. The second letters of each seismic traverse number identify the individual village where the traverse was performed (i.e. ST is in Village T). INC SCS&T 14112 July 29, 1983 Page 4 RECOWENDATIONS ',: 1) EXPANSIVE SOILS: It is anticipated that isolated areas of qxpansive soils may be encountered within three feet of finish grade in Villages H and I. It is recommended that in areas to receive structures said soils be undercut to a depth of three feet and replaced with properly compacted, nondetrimentally expansive fill soils. In areas to receive streets and paved parking, soils should be undercut to a depth of one foot. It is our opinion that the extent of the undercutting will not be large. 2) SLOPE STABILITY: Abundant and random lenses of claystones and silt- -- stones were encountered in the area of Villages H and I where cut .-- slopes with a maximum height of 45 feet are anticipated. The follow- ing table provides maximum heights for different cut slope inclina- tions. It is our opinion that these slopes will possess a factor of safety of at least 1.5 with respect to deep seated rotational failure (see Plate Number 31). It is our opinion that fill slopes constructed at an inclination of 2:l will possess a factor of safety of at least 1.5 with respect to deep seated failure (see Plate Numer 31) to a height of at least 70 feet. However, due to the presence of relatively weaker claystones and siltstones on the ancitipated fill soils it is recornnended that 90UTHERN CAL,FOl?N,A 501L AND TE5TING. INC. SCS&T 14112 July 29, 1983 Page 5 fill slopes higher than 70 feet be constructed with select material at the bottom section of the slope. The upper 70 feet of slope may be construc- ted with a mix of silty sand with minor claystones and siltstones (see Plate Number 33). FIELD EXPLORATIONS Twenty-six subsurface explorations were made at the locations indicated on the attached Plate Number 1 on July 11 and 18, 1983. These explorations consisted of trenches excavated utilizing a rubber-tired backhoe equipped with a 24-inch bucket. In addition, 17 seismic traverse lines were per- formed. The field work was conducted under the observation of our engi- neering geology personnel. The explorations were carefully logged when made. These logs are pre- sented on the following Plate Numbers 3 through 26. The soils are des- cribed in accordance with the Unified Soils Classification System as illustrated on the attached simplified chart on Plate 2. In addition, a verbal textural description, the wet color, the apparent moisture, and the density or consistency are given on the logs. Soil densities for granular soils are given as either very loose, loose, medium dense, dense, or very dense. The consistency of silts or clays is given as either very soft, soft, medium stiff, stiff, very stiff, or hard. Disturbed and undisturbed samples of typical and representative soils were obtained and returned to the laboratory for testing. The results of our seismic traverse lines are presented in Plates Numbers 27, 28 and 29. LABORATORY TESTING Laboratory tests were performed in accordance with the generally accepted American Society for Testing and Materials (A.S.T.M.) test methods or SDUTHERN CnL,FonNln SOIL AND TESTING. A brief description of the tests performed are presented below: a) b) cl MOISTURE-DENSITY: Field moisture content and dry density were determined for representative undisturbed samples obtained. This information was an aid to classification and permitted recogni- I tion of variations in material consistency with depth. The dry unit weight is determined in pounds per cubic foot, and the field moisture content is determined as a percentage of the soil's dry weight. The results are summarized in the trench logs. CLASSIFICATION: Field classifications were verified in the laboratory by visual examination. The final soil classifications are in accordance with the Unified Soil Classification System. DIRECT SHEAR TESTS: Direct shear tests were performed to deter- mine the failure envelope based on yield shear strength. The shear box was designed to accomodate a sample having a diameter of 2.375 inches or 2.50 inches and a height of 1.0 inch. Samples were tested at different vertical loads and at saturated moisture content. The shear stress was applied at a constant rate of strain of approximately 0.05 inches per minute.
