The site location is shown on the vicinity map provided as Figure Number 1. It is our understanding that the site will be developed to receive a commercial development, school site and residential subdivision with associated paved streets that are designated as Villages L2, Q, R and T. To assist in the preparation of this report we were provided with preliminary grading plans prepared by M Hunsaker and Associates. The site configuration, approximately topography and location of our subsurface borings are shown on Plate Numbers 1 to 19 of this report. SCOPE OF SERVICE This investigation consisted of: surface reconnaissance; air-track boring survey; analysis of the field data; research of available geological literature pertaining to the site; and preparation of this report. Specifically, the intent of this analysis was to further evaluate the excavation characteristics of the rock material underlying the site and its impact on the proposed site grading. Our conclusions are based on the findings of the air-track borings and our previous geotechnical studies of the site. FINDINGS SITE DESCRIPTION The subject site consists of undeveloped parcels of land located easterly of Harwich Drive and Glasgow Drive in Carlsbad, California. The site is separated into four areas and are designated as Village L2, Village R, Village T and Village Q. The site consists of approximately 178 acres and is bounded by undeveloped land on the east, residential and undeveloped land on the south, residential and commercial land on the north and Glasgow Drive as well as undeveloped land on the west. Topographically, the site consists of hilly terrain with well-incised drainage swales. Drainage is accomplished via sheet flow and the drainage swales. Elevations range from approximately 450 feet (MSL) to 190 feet (MSL). Vegetation consists of moderate to dense chaparral and native grasses. An overhead high voltage power line traverses the southeastern portion of the site and a large water tank, a pump station, and associated subsurface water lines, also exists on site. SCS&T 9711027 February 28, 1997 Page 3 GENERAL GEOLOGY AND SUBSURFACE CONDITIONS GEOLOGIC SETTING AND SOIL DESCRIPTION: The subject site is underlain by materials of both igneous and sedimentary origin. The igneous material is part of the basement complex consisting of Jurassic metavolcanic rocks and Cretaceous granitic rocks. The sedimentary material consists of the sandstones and siltstones of the Tertiary-age Santiago Formation, Tertiary-age paleosol, Quaternary-age sandstone, alluvium, and man-made fill. A brief description of the materials on site, in general decreasing order of age, was taken in part from the October 6, 1988 report (referenced) and is presented below. It should be noted that the term "rock" as used in this report applies in the geologic sense in that all native materials of igneous origin or sediments that are sufficiently consolidated or coherent can be classified as "rock." This term does not necessarily indicate that the materials are not excavatable by conventional earth-moving equipment. The approximate limits of the various materials are indicated on Plate Numbers 1 through 19. 1) BASEMENT COMPLEX - JURASSIC METAVOLCANICS AND CRETACEOUS GRANITICS (Jmv/Kgr): The oldest rocks exposed at the site are the Jurassic-age metavolcanic and associated hypabyssal rocks. Both of these rocks weather to dark, smooth hills or jagged, angular outcrops with a clayey, rocky topsoil. The metavolcanic and hypabyssal rocks are generally rippable with conventional earthmoving equipment to depths of only a few feet. The other rocks in the basement complex are the granitic rocks which have intruded the older rocks and are, to a large degree, mixed with them. The granitic rocks at the project site appear to be both tonalitic and granodioritic in composition. The weathering and rippability characteristics of the tonalitic rocks is generally somewhat similar to those of the metavolcanic/hypabyssal rocks. The granodioritic rocks on the other hand are generally rippable to greater depths than the metavolcanic rocks. In contrast to the weathering characteristics of the metavolcanic/hypabyssal rock and the tonalitic rocks, the granodioritic rocks commonly weather to rounded outcrops or boulders in a matrix of grus ("decomposed granite"). The granodioritic rocks are variable in their excavation characteristics but commonly contain areas which are rippable to depths of several feet to several tens of feet, yet, include localized areas of boulders or unweathered rock which are not rippable with conventional heavy equipment. SCS&T 9711027 February 28, 1997 Page 4 M The areas underlain by the respective rock types in the basement complex are differentiated on **" the accompanying geologic map. It should be noted that the different rock types are mixed and "** the areas on the map only indicate which rock type is dominant. Where the symbol for the ** granitic rock is listed first (i.e.: Kgr/Jmv), the area is underlain predominantly by granitic rock •« with lesser amounts of metavolcanic and hypabyssal rocks. *W «. 2) TERTIARY PALEOSOL (Tp): A zone of ancient paleosol is present in scattered areas of •m the project site (Village T). This paleosol is the result of the torrid climate and relatively stable geologic conditions that were present in the San Diego area during the early Cenozoic era. ,« The resulting ancient soil (paleosol) is lateritic and consists predominantly of low expansive ^ sandy clays and silty sands. A thin residual cap of ironstone concretions and siliceous pebbles m is present on much of the paleosol. The thickness of the paleosol varies from a few feet to a few tens of feet.*fm •** 3) SANTIAGO FORMATION (Ts): The sediments at the project site are represented by the•*«* sandstones and siltstones of the Santiago Formation. The Santiago Formation at the project site Mat appears to be characterized largely by grayish white, sandstones and minor siltstones. 4) QUATERNARY SANDSTONE (Qu): A small area of unconsolidated, grayish brown to -*w* yellowish brown, fine to medium grained sandstone was encountered at the far eastern portion «• of the northern boundary of the site. This material unconformably overlies the Santiago Formation and may possibly be reworked Santiago Formation materials. It is difficult to /^§distinguish the Quaternary sandstone from the Santiago Formation on the basis of their surficial characteristics. This unit was observed in other areas in the general vicinity and may possibly m be encountered at other localities on the project site during grading operations. * 5) OLDER QUATERNARY ALLUVIUM (Qoal): Older alluvial deposits consisting of grayish - brown to yellowish brown and greenish brown, medium dense, silty sands, clayey sands, and *» sandy silts were encountered at various locations at the project site. These deposits range in thickness from only a few feet to in excess of ten feet. <3°5# 6) YOUNGER QUATERNARY ALLUVIUM (Qyal): Younger alluvial deposits consisting of «« loose to medium dense and soft to medium stiff mixtures of clay, silt, sand, and gravel are present in the modern stream channels. These deposits range in thickness from less than a foot SCS&T9711027 February 28, 1997 Page 5 to an estimated maximum of ten feet. Due to their ubiquitous occurrence, the younger alluvial deposits are not delineated on the geologic map except in the larger channels. 7) ARTIFICIAL FILL (Qaf): Several small areas of man-made fill which have been obtained from on-site or nearby sources were observed. These areas are generally limited to small earthen dams, desilting basins and minor roads associated with previous agricultural operations and the existing water tank and pump station. Most of these fills are very minor in relation to the overall site and generally are not indicated on the plans included with this report. EXCAVATION CHARACTERISTIC GENERAL: The scope of this report is restricted to the discussion of the excavation characteristics of the hard rock on site. The report will focus primarily on the results of the air-track borings of each village. In addition, the results and interpretations of previously performed seismic traverses are presented in Appendix A of this report and their approximate locations are also indicated along with the locations of the air-track borings on Plate Numbers 1 through 19. AIR-TRACK BORING SURVEY: One hundred twenty nine rotary air-track borings were performed in areas where shallow hardrock in conjunction with deep excavations were anticipated. The borings indicate that portions of the site will require heavy ripping and blasting to accomplish the proposed excavations. The locations of these borings are shown on Plate Numbers 1 through 19. Logs of the borings are presented on Plate Numbers 20 through 148 and designated as Borings Numbers AT-1 through AT-129. Boring Numbers AT-1 through AT-82 and Boring Number AT-129 are located within Village Q. Boring Numbers AT-83 through AT-91 are located in Village L2 and Boring Numbers AT-92 through AT-128 are located in Village T. No borings were performed in Village R. The proposed and/or anticipated depths of the excavations at the locations of the borings are indicated at the top of the boring logs. A depth of ten feet was assumed for utility trenches within the streets and the proposed cut shown on the logs reflect this assumption. The equipment utilized for the air-track borings consists of an Ingersol-Rand LM-500 track-mounted rotary air-percussion drill rig. A four-inch diameter drill bit was utilized for the excavations. The drilling rate (feet per second) for the air-track drill rig is related to the density of the materials drilled. The denser the materials the longer it requires to drill. The rippability of the materials drilled is correlated to the drilling rate in graphical representations on the boring logs. The granitic and metavolcanic rock are classified as rippable (1 to 12 sec./ft.), marginally rippable (12 to 18 sec./ft.), probable blasting (18 to 22 sec./ft.) and blasting required (greater than 22 sec./ft.) based on the drilling rate at the specific boring site. Rippability characteristics are based on SCS&T 9711027 February 28, 1997 Page 6 excavations made with a Caterpillar D-9 Dozer with a single-shank ripper for overall mass grading and with a Caterpillar 245 Excavator with a single-shank ripper for trench excavations. It should be recognized that variations in equipment and rock conditions will affect the ease or difficulty in which the materials can be excavated. Some of the variations in rock conditions which will affect the effort required for the excavations are as follows: a) Fractures, faults, and planes of weakness of any kind. b) Weathering and degree of decomposition. c) Brittleness and crystalline nature. d) Grain size. For the purpose of this report the various rock conditions of each village will be discussed separately. VILLAGE L2 Village L2 is located adjacent to the northern, eastern and southern sides of the large, water tank, on the northwestern portion of the over-all subject site. Elevations in this area range from approximately 454 feet (MSL) to about 400 feet (MSL). Village L2 is underlain by a mixture of granitic and metavolcanic rock, with numerous surface boulders ranging up to approximately four feet in diameter as well as numerous hard rock outcrops. Excavations ranging up to 34 feet are proposed for this area. Nine air-track borings, AT-83 through AT-91, were performed within in the areas of the proposed cuts. The approximate locations of these borings are presented on Plate Number 1. The results of these borings are graphically presented on Plate Numbers 102 through 110. The results of these borings indicate that blasting will be required to achieve the proposed grades. All of our borings in this area encountered hard rock materials. The deptiis in which the hard rock was encountered varied from approximately two feet to a maximum of eleven feet below the existing ground surface. As noted in Borings Number AT-83 and AT-88, hard rock that may require blasting was encountered as shallow as four feet and two feet, respectively. Due to the hardness of the bedrock at proposed finish grades, it is highly likely that the cut pads will have to be undercut to facilitate trenching for footings and utility lines. In addition, it is also anticipated that the condition of the finished cut slope adjacent to the water tank may be such that over cutting and then construction the slope as a fill slope may be advisable, so as to produce a suitable slope with a 2 to 1 (horizontal to vertical) inclination. Many large floaters and boulders *** requiring splitting and/or disposing in a suitable area are anticipated. at VILLAGE Q tM .« Village Q (Lot El included) is located on the westerly portion of the subject site. Elevations range #m from approximately 445 feet (MSL) to approximately 250 feet (MSL). Previous brushing and „, agricultural actives have resulted in numerous piles of boulders being placed throughout this area. m In addition, numerous hard rock outcrops with naturally occurring boulders exist throughout this area. Some of these boulders appear to be in excess of eight feet in diameter. Proposed excavations — range up to approximately 46 feet. Eighty-three air-track borings were extended within Village Q. The borings are designated as AT-1 through AT-82 and AT-129. The approximate locations of*M these borings are presented on Plate Numbers 2 through 7 and the results are graphically presented on Plate Numbers 20 through 101 and Plate Number 148. The results of the air-track borings and the previous seismic traverses indicate that many areas of shallow, hard rock exist and will require d* very heavy ripping and/or blasting to facilitate the proposed excavations. *m •*» Three areas in particular are likely to produce relatively large quantities of over-sized rock, such as boulders and floaters, as well as require blasting to facilitate the proposed cuts. The first of the ^gg three areas consist of a portion of Tamarack Avenue and the proposed cut slope located south of the proposed extension of Harwich Drive on the northwesterly portion of the site (Plate Numbers 5 and ** 6). Numerous large surface boulders and rock outcrops along the ridges and existing slopes exist in this area. Based on Boring Numbers AT-47 to AT-54, AT-56 to AT-59 and AT-61, most of this ""* area will require very heavy ripping and/or blasting to achieve the proposed grades and the associated utility trenches within the streets. Hard rock that will most likely require blasting was '» encountered between the depths of four feet (AT-51) and eighteen feet (AT-52) within this area. « The second area is located on the northern portion of Village Q (Plate Number 6). This area <• consists of a ridge that trends roughly east-west, and has rock outcrops located along the ridge top. m Relatively shallow cuts are proposed for this area (up to 10 feet). However, based on Boring m Numbers AT-66 to AT-70, undercutting and/or trenching for utility lines will likely encounter marginally rippable and/or nonrippable hard rock, specifically on the westerly portion of the ridge. — Marginally rippable bedrock was encountered beginning at depths of three to ten feet below the existing ground surface and nonrippable rock was encountered at depths of two feet (AT-68) to '"*W eighteen feet (AT-70). The third area is located on the easterly to northeasterly portion of Village SCS&T 9711027 February 28, 1997 Page 8 »» ** Q (Plate Numbers 3 and 6) and consists of highly variable rock conditions. Several rock outcrops *** that are nonrippable exist within this area, with the areas in between consisting of bedrock that is * rippable to marginally rippable. It is anticipated that the conditions will be highly variable within ** relatively short horizontal distances. As noted in Boring Numbers AT-1 to AT-20 and AT-72 to « AT-76, over two-thirds of the borings indicate that marginally and/or nonrippable rock will be *» encountered prior to achieving the proposed grades. •*» m Some of the largest cuts are proposed for the area located on the southeasterly side of the large „ water tank (Plate Number 3). A broad ridge with a few rock outcrops covers much of this area. ,m Cuts ranging up to approximately 36 feet plus the additional depth (assumed 10 feet) for utility lines ^ are proposed of this area. Based on the air-track borings (AT-1 to AT-3 and AT-16 to AT-20) much m of the rock in this area, beginning at depths of approximately 1 foot (AT-19) to 29 feet (AT-18), is marginally rippable with some areas being nonrippable at depths of approximately 9 feet (AT-19)>m to 31 feet (AT-1) below the existing ground surface. The shallow nonrippable areas were located near rock outcrops. The existing outcrops and the areas within their immediate vicinity are the most likely locations that will require blasting at depths of approximately 9 feet, 10 feet, and 13 feet at •iM the locations of Boring Numbers AT-19, AT-17 and AT-3, respectively, while the other areas were <*» rippable to marginally rippable to greater depths. tar A separate area of Village Q (Plate Number 7) consists of the proposed commercial lot (Lot El) <4H located on the southwest corner of Village Q. This area is underlain by metavolcanic, hypabyssal and granitic rock. This area previously consisted of a topographic knoll that was approximately 30 "" feet high. The knoll has subsequentially been cut down and the lot has been rough, sheet graded "** so as to slope gently toward the southwest corner of the lot. Although an up-to-date topographic "*** map has not be drawn to show the existing elevation contours, it appears that proposed grades will — require cuts ranging up to approximately six feet on the western and ten feet at the northern portions " of the lot. The air-track borings indicate that the on site materials are rippable to depths varying •- from approximately two feet (AT-81) to 15 feet (AT-77) below the existing ground. The Boring «* Numbers (AT-77, AT-78 and AT-82) indicate that the deepest cuts can be made with conventional „ heavy grading equipment. Marginally rippable materials are likely to be encountered at depths of m approximately 2 to 5 feet in the vicinity of AT-79 and AT-80, respectively. The areas where the :m least amount of rippable material exists appear to be within the central portion of the lot. The m central portion of the site corresponds to where the deepest cuts were previously made to excavate the original topographic knoll. Based on the existing rock material on the ground surface, a large SCS&T 9711027 February 28, 1997 Page 9 percentage of oversized rock, and relatively few fines will be produced from excavations made in this area. Although some areas of Village Q are rippable to the proposed finished grades, as indicated by air- track borings AT-15, AT-18, AT-38, AT-43, AT-45, AT-46, AT-53, AT-54, AT-61, AT-62 and AT-76, it will be the excavations for deep utility trenches and/or undercutting of the pads that will encounter marginally rippable and nonrippable materials. VILLAGE T Village T is located easterly and southeasterly of Village Q. Roughly, the northern third of Village T (Plate Numbers 10, 11 and 12) is underlain by relatively thick deposits of sedimentary deposits of the Santiago Formation. The proposed cuts within the sedimentary deposits of the Santiago Formation underlying the northern portion of Village T should not present problems for excavating with conventional heavy grading equipment. The southern two-thirds of Village T are underlain by granitic and metavolcanic rock, and sediments consisting of ancient paleosols and Quaternary-age deposits. On the southern portion of Village T the granitic and metavolcanic rock is exposed along the outside perimeter while the sedimentary deposits are primarily located within the central portion. Proposed excavations within the southern two-thirds of Village T range up to approximately 38 feet deep (including ten feet for utility trenches). The proposed excavations within the Santiago Formation do not appear to present a problem as indicated by Boring Numbers AT-93 through AT- 97. Air-track boring AT-111 (Plate Number 17) indicates the paleosol is rippable to depths of at least 22 feet below the ground surface. However seismic traverse S-8 (1988) located near AT-111, indicates marginally rippable to nonrippable material at zero to five feet below the existing ground surface. In addition, Boring Numbers AT-112 and AT-120 to AT-123 (Plate Number 19) indicate that the paleosol will be marginally rippable beginning at depths of approximately three to five feet below the existing ground surface. It should be noted that due to the clayey type of soils comprising the paleosols, the reliability of the air-track borings is suspect. Due to the clayey soils blocking the air passages, the air-track drill rig typically will indicate that the soils will be more difficult to excavate that they are in practice. However, when the air-track borings are taken in conjunction with the seismic traverse, and they indicate relatively the same results, it would be prudent to accept the more conservative conclusion that the paleosols will be marginally rippable. Although blasting will probably not be required, these soils may be slow and time consuming to excavate with SCS&T9711027 February 28, 1997 Page 10 conventional equipment. Light trenching equipment will experience problems excavating the paleosols. However, these soils will most likely break down into a material that will contain a relatively large percentage of fines in relation to the percentage of fines derived from marginally, rippable granitic or metavolcanic rock. The granitic and metavolcanic areas are notable due to the numerous boulders, and hard rock outcrops. The surface boulders, generally, appear to be less than eight feet in diameter and generally are in their natural state. The areas underlain by granitic and/or metavolcanic rock vary from rippable to nonrippable bedrock in a relatively short horizontal distance. It was noted that Boring Numbers AT-100 to AT-102 (Plate Number 14), drilled within the immediate vicinity of existing rock outcrops, generally indicated that the bedrock is marginally rippable at relatively shallow depths (eight to nine feet) while Boring Number AT-101 drilled a short distance away indicated that the proposed excavation (25 feet) could most likely be made with conventional grading equipment without blasting. The proposed excavation within the vicinity of borings AT-115, AT- 116 and AT-117 (Plate Number 18) will require blasting and is likely to produce a relatively large percentage of oversized rock and boulders with relatively few fines. In addition, it is anticipated that the finished cut slope within this area will be very rough and it may be advisable to overcut the slope and reconstruct it as a fill slope so as to have a suitable finished slope with a 2 to 1 (horizontal to vertical) inclination. VILLAGE R . Village R (Plate Number 8) is underlain by Tertiary-age Santiago Formation and Quaternary-age sedimentary deposits. The proposed cuts within this area will expose sediments that are readily excavated with conventional heavy grading equipment. No air-track borings or seismic traverses were performed in this area. CONCLUSIONS Based on our recent air-track borings and a review of the previous seismic traverse surveys, it is our opinion that many of the areas in Villages L2, Q and T are not readily rippable to the proposed grades. Heavy ripping, which can be very time consuming, and blasting will most likely be required for some of the areas. Village R and the northern portion of Village T are underlain by sediments which are anticipated to be rippable with conventional, heavy grading equipment. SCS&T9711027 February 28, 1997 Page 11 As a summary it is noted that eight borings of nine in Village L2 indicate that marginally rippable to nonrippable materials will have to be excavated to achieve the proposed grades. Fifty-four borings of eighty-three within Village Q indicate that marginally rippable to nonrippable materials will have to be excavated to achieve the proposed grades. Twenty-two borings of thirty-seven in the southern two-thirds of Village T indicate that marginally to nonrippable materials will have to be excavated to achieve the proposed grades. Although some areas are rippable to proposed grades it is anticipated that many cut and transition pads in Villages L2, Q and T will require undercutting to facilitate trenching for footings and utility lines. In several areas of Village Q the materials are indicated as being rippable to the proposed pad grades. However, the undercutting of pads and excavating for deep utility trenches within the streets will require heavy ripping and/or blasting. Air-track borings AT-15, AT-18, AT-38, AT-43, AT-45, AT-46, AT-53, AT-54, AT-61, AT-62 and AT-76 in Village Q are specific areas where this condition is likely to occur. Areas requiring blasting in Village L2, Village Q, and portions of the southern section of Village T will generate primarily angular rocky material derived from metavolcanic and tonalite granitic rock (Jmv/Kgr). This material will require mixing with fines (silty, clays and sands) prior to placement as compacted fill. Fines will be primarily generated from surficial soils, the northern portion of Village T, Village R as well as areas underlain by granodiorite granitic rock. Keeping the proper mix of rock and fines will be an important consideration during grading operations. Based on this consideration, it is our opinion that Village L2 will require importing of fine soils to achieve the proposed grade. Village Q may also require importing from another village. In addition to the angular rock fragments derived from excavations that will be blasted, large surface boulders and hard rock floaters within otherwise rippable materials will be encountered. The surface boulders appear to range up to approximately eight feet in diameter, however below ground surface floaters may range in size up to and exceed ten feet in diameter. The location, quantity and size of floaters cannot be determined or estimated with any reasonable reliability. The paleosols (Tp) located in Village T are anticipated to be rippable to marginally rippable. Although portions of these soils may be rippable to marginally rippable it is anticipated that excavating these soils with conventional grading equipment may be slow and time consuming. However, in contrast to the marginally rippable granitic and metavolcanic areas the paleosols are expected to produce a larger percent of fines with very few, if any, boulders and floaters. CALAVERA HEIGHTS BY: JRH JOB NUMBER: 9711027 DATE: 02-20-97 PLATE NO. 148 SCS&T 9711027 February 28, 1997 Appendix A, Page 1 r SEISMIC REFRACTION SURVEY GENERAL: Seismic refraction surveys were performed previously (1973, 1981, 1983 and 1988) specifically to facilitate the project planning by determining the variation in seismic velocity of the underlying materials and to determine a reasonable approximation of the depth from the surface to the boundaries between rippable, marginally rippable, and nonrippable bedrock. The seismic survey measures the velocities of soundwaves as they travel through various materials. The velocity depends on the density of the materials. Dense materials such as granitic rock conduct soundwaves at a high velocity, whereas, loose materials such as topsoils conduct the soundwaves at much lower velocities. The seismograph's depth of investigation is closely related to the length of the seismic traverse. For a particular length of traverse, e.g., 100 feet, using a ratio of 3:1 between length and depth, we conclude that this length of survey line will detect the boundaries between materials of varying density and velocity to a depth of approximately 33 feet. The length of traverses in this survey range from 50 feet to 100 feet, which should reach depths of approximately 17 feet to 33 feet. FIELD INVESTIGATION: Fifty-one seismic traverses were performed by our firm and ten were performed by others on the subject site between 1973 and 1988. These traverses were located in areas of proposed cuts. The locations of all of the traverses are shown on Plate Numbers 1 through 19. Logs of the traverses that were retained in our files are presented in this Appendix A. DISCUSSION OF EXCAVATION CHARACTERISTICS: The results of the seismic survey indicate that the metavolcanic and granitic bedrock is rippable to varying depths ranging from approximately two feet to in excess of 30 feet below existing grade. Marginally rippable and nonrippable rock is present below these depths. It should be noted that there are isolated hard rock floaters within rippable materials which may require blasting to facilitate grading operations. A more detailed description of the rippability characteristics and a summary of each seismic traverse are presented below. RIPPABILITY CHARACTERISTICS OF GRANODIORITIC ROCK RIPPABLE CONDITION (0 - 4,500 ft./sec.): This velocity range indicates rippable materials which may consist of decomposed granitic rock possessing random hardrock floaters. These materials will break down into slightly silty, well graded sand, whereas the floaters will require disposal in an area of nonstructural fill. Further, large floaters exposed at or near finish grade may * present additional problems of removal and disposal. -PI * Materials within the velocity range of from 3,500 to 4,000 fps are rippable with difficulty by backhoes and other light trenching equipment. -MSt MARGINALLY RIPPABLE CONDITION (4,500 - 5,500 ft./sec.): This range is rippable m with effort by a D-9 in only slightly weathered granitics. This velocity range may also include „ numerous floaters with the possibility of extensive areas of fractured granitics. Excavations may m produce material that will partially break down into a coarse, slightly silty to clean sand, but containing a high percentage of + 1/4 inch material. Less fractured of weathered materials may — be found in this velocity range that would require blasting to facilitate removal. -<*"%. Material within this velocity range are beyond the capability of backhoes and lighter trenching equipment. Difficulty of excavation would also be realized by gradalls and other heavy trenching equipment. Ki"j£ NONRIPPABLE CONDITION (5,500 ft./sec. and Greater): This velocity range includes --'*S« nonrippable material consisting primarily of fractured granitics at lower velocities with increasing hardness at higher velocities. In its natural state, it is not desirable for building pad ,i« subgrade. Blasting will produce oversize material requiring disposal in areas of nonstructural fill. at ** This upper limit has been based on rippability with a Caterpillar D-9L using a conventional #9 *** single shank ripper. However, this upper limit of rippability may some times be increased to '» 7,000 to 8,000 fps material using the D-9 mounted #9 Series D Ripper. >» RIPPABILITY CHARACTERISTICS OF METAVOLCANICS AND ASSOCIATED HYPABYSSAL ROCKS AND TONALITIC ROCKS *** « RIPPABLE CONDITION (0 - 4,500 ft./sec.): This velocity range indicates rippable materials which may vary from decomposed metavolcanics at lower velocities to only slightly ... decomposed, fractured rock at the higher velocities. Although rippable, materials may be produced by excavation that will not be useable in structural fills due to a lack of fines. is- Experience has shown that material within the range of 4,000 to 4,500 fps may often consist of SCS&T 9711027 February 28, 1997 Appendix A, Page 3 severely to moderately fractured angular rock with little or no fines and sizeable quantities of + 1/4 inch material. For velocities between 3,500 to 4,500 fps, rippability will be difficult for backhoes and light trenching equipment. MARGINALLY RIPPABLE CONDITION (4,500 - 5,500 ft./sec.): Excavations in this velocity range would be extremely time consuming and would produce fractured rock with little or no fines. The higher velocities could require blasting. Trenching equipment would not function. NONRIPPABLE CONDITION (5,500 ft./sec. and Greater): This velocity range may include moderately to slightly fractured rock which would require blasting for removal. Material produced would consist of a high percentage of oversize and angular rock. Rippability of Metavolcanics may be accomplished for higher velocities using the Caterpillar D-9 with the #9 D Series Ripper. Due to the fractured nature of the metavolcanics, ripping might be accomplished in as high as 8,000 fps material. NOTE: This upper limit has been based on rippability with a Caterpillar D-9L using a conventional #9 Single Shank Ripper. However, this upper limit of rippability may sometimes be increased by using other heavy excavation equipment. The above mentioned rippability limits are based on a modification of charts prepared by Caterpillar Company and the article in "Roads and Streets," September 1967. According to the Caterpillar Performance Handbook, dated October 1986, the upper limits of rippability has increased over the aforementioned limits. SEISMIC TRAVERSE LIMITATIONS: The results of the seismic survey for this investigation reflect rippability conditions only for the areas of the traverses. However, the conditions of the various soil-rock units appear to be similar for the remainder of the site and may be assumed to possess similar characteristics. Our reporting is presently limited in that refraction seismic surveys do not allow for prediction of a percentage of expectable oversize or hardrock floaters. Subsurface variations in the degree of weathered rock to fractured rock are not accurately predictable. The seismic refraction method requires that materials become increasingly dense with depth. In areas where denser, higher velocity materials are underlain by lower velocity materials, the lower velocity materials would not be indicated by our survey. All of the velocities used as upper limits from rippability are subject to fluctuation depending upon such local variations in rock conditions as: a) Fractures, faults and planes of weakness of any kind. b) Weathering, and degree of decomposition. c) Brittleness and crystalline nature. d) Grain Size. It should be noted that ripping of higher velocity materials may become totally dependent on the time available and the economics of the project. In addition, isolated boulders and abundant shot-rock are anticipated within cut areas and will require special handling during grading operations. A summary of each seismic traverse is presented below and on Plate Number 12. Our interpretation is based on the rippability characteristics of granitic and metavolcanic rock as described in pages 8 through 10.
