The plans were compared against the California Building Code (CBC) Section 1207 Sound Transmission requirements. The CBC Section 1207 defines the noise transmission and noise insulation performance standards requirements of common habitual areas. These assemblies and notes are consistent with the CBC requirements of having a minimum STC and IIC rating of 50. During construction of the building assemblies field verification should be conducted by the project architect and/or an acoustical engineer. Below are some additional features for consideration: Floor/Ceiling Assemblies: Since gyp-crete will be installed the use of most underlayment products will provide sufficient sound reductions. Products for your consideration include Jumpax, Maxxon, Nobel Seal, and Stauf, to name a few. In areas were carpet will be utilized, increasing the density of the carpet pad will also help with noise reductions. Additionally, the use of a non-standard installation that has a better STC value will help reduce noise transfer. Examples of these types of installations include SSP Cotton Fiber Insulation and Johns Manville sound control batts (also can be used in wall cavities). The use of a ceiling hanger assembly will also isolate or decouple the assembly and help reduce noise transfer. Additional information on some of these products is provided as an Attachment. Common Wall Assemblies: There are several products and applications that can be added to the common or party walls to help reduce noise transfer. These include the use of mass load vinyl (MLV), green glue, and better installation as described in the floor/ceiling assemblies above. Some products/manufactures can achieve STC ratings above 50 with a single stud, but I would not recommend a single studded wall since tenants and owners will create penetrations in the walls and over time the integrity of the wall will be compromised. 9/7/2011 1 1167-04 Plan Review -Noise ,. Ms. Sarah Beckman Shea Homes Limited Partnership, San Diego 9990 Mesa Rim Road San Diego, CA 92121 Ldn&ontlultlng, ,~ 44v C.resltourl L.;ure. Fal/brooK QI '/2028 phone 7vo-471-t2?1 Fa~ 1vo•v8'1-4'f41 Additionally, the use of an iso-tape or decoupling pad, along with acoustical caulking, at the perimeters of the wall studs can help reduce noise transfer between units. Windows: Increasing the STC ratings on the windows will help reduce "flanking noise" between units where windows of two separate units are close together. Garage door openers: The use of a wall mounted garage door helps with the direct transfer of noise through the ceiling. If ceiling mounted garage doors are utilized they should not be chain driven. The Marantec America garage door open with a rail operation and a slower lifting motor is a good example. You may also want to consider resiliently mounting the openers with a simple isolation pad or rubberize washer assembly to reduce sound transmission. Should you have any questions regarding the above information, please do not hesitate to contact me at (760) 473-1253. The unique design of the Model ICW bracket allows the Isolator to be Installed on the Joists to optimize celllng height. A channel cllp/levellng rod assembly Is designed to carry a single piece of 1-1/2" x 1/2" 16•gage steel carrying channel. Drywall furring channel Is attached to the carrying channel. The system provides the Installer with a means for leveling the isolated celllng framing. Gypsum board attaches quickly and easily thanks to a preload spacer that holds the Isolator rlgld until the weight of the gypsum board compresses the spring. Incorporate Model ICW Into any isolated celling design where one-Inch (1 "} rated spring deflection and mlnlmal reduction In celling height are needed for superior performance coupled with low-profile design. Benefits • Maximum natural frequency of 4.4 Hz under lightest typical load conditions. • STC 76, IIC 62 with Model ICW attached to 2" x 10" joists and suspending two (2) layers of gypsum board with 3·1/2" fiberglass batt In airspace. • Multiple features Incorporated Into the design ensure Inexpensive Installation. • Spring/neoprene cup combination Improves performance against low- frequency noise. • Actual Installed load can vary between 75% and 150% or rated load without slgn!Ocant Impact to celling performance. The joist cavities was filled with 3.5" bait insulation. MEASUREMENT AND RESULTS PROCEDURE The procedure used in the test was made in conformance with ASTM Designations E1007-97, "Standard Test Method for Field Measurement of Tapping Machine Impact Sound Transmission Through Floor-Celling Assemblies and Associated Supported Structures." The FIIC value was determined using the typical IIC contour from ASTM Designation E989-89, "Standard Classification for Determination of Impact Insulation Class (IIC)."
