EPA/821/R-02/013, 2002 Freshwater Chronic The Lab Control must meet or exceed a mean of 80% survival; 60% of the surviving females must produce 3 or more broods of offspring; and surviving females must produce a mean of 15 or more offspring (only the first 3 broods are used for calculating mean reproduction). Test results met all test acceptability criteria and internal QA/QC requirements. Table 1. Survival of Ceriodaphnia was not affected in any of the four samples tested. However, all four samples did result in some degree of toxicity with regards to the reproduction endpoint. Adverse effects to the reproduction were expected, however, due to the elevated conductivity of the samples. Through internal studies and experience, we have consistently observed reproductive effects to Ceriodaphnia when conductivity levels exceed approximately 2,500 pS/cm, Conductivity is related to the concentration of salts in a sample. The degree of effect on reproduction of C. dubia was related to conductivity during this monitoring study as well. Well # 3, with the greatest conductivity (4,800 pS/cm), had the greatest effect on the number of offspring produced (a 76% reduction from the control). To evaluate potential effects due to conductivity alone, laboratory controls of the same conductivity as the samples were created and tested concurrently. The conductivity control results closely matched that of their respective samples and were not statistically different, further suggesting that conductivity could account for the reproductive effects observed in all samples tested.
