For the ,mall-span construction typical of housing, it is 1ometimes arbitrarily ~ssumed that 50 per cent pf the hip-roof load is carried by the hip rafter. The resultant reaction· of the hip' rafter at the peak is then used in the design of the structural clement or truss at the peak. Figure 7.20 shows ~ 45-deg hip rafter calculated for use.with 15-ft rafters and 40-lb load (5Q per cent of load considered in bcpding, neglecting direct atress).
