Stone 1060 Chinquapin, Apt. #IO Carlsbad, California 92008 Re: Job No. 74-79 Proposed Two Story Residence 1715 Butters Drive Carlsbad, California Subject: Bearing Capacity Dear Mr. Stone: Enclosed are the results of our observations and tests as you requested for the above referenced project to determine the bearing capacity of the proposed foundation system and any obvious geologic problems on the site. It is understood the proposed residence will be a hexagonal shaped wood frame house. The foundation will use continuous wall footings with isolated footings in the interior. The footings were designed for 2000 psf in bearing. On 26 June 1974 a representative of this laboratory dug two test holes in the house area. The holes revealed the site is located on firm nonexpansive native soil. The soil profile is described as 6 inches of loose topsoil which grades to brown weakly cemented sandstone. A field density test was taken at the proposed footing depth and the soil sample returned to the laboratory for the bearing capacity determination. The soil sample was remolded to the inplace conditions of moisture and density in three 1 inch high 23 inch diameter brass .r molds. The molds were loaded urith normal loads of .5, 1.0, and 1.5 K.S.F. respectively and sheared to failure in the undrained condition. The values of internal friction and apparent cohesion derived from this test were used in the Terzaghi Formula in accordance with the procedure outlined in Ref. 1, page 170, to compute the allowable bearing capacity.
