GENERAL: A caroort is a cowered motor vehicle parking structure accessory to a Group I (one or two'family residential) occupancy.
The carport structure shall be only one story in height and shall be entirely open on two or more sides except tor structural supports
LOCATION: Whan a carport is located within three feet of a property line, the carport shall have a stucco wall on the property
line side; such wall shall extend to the roof sheathing. No openings are allowed on the side facing the property line. A carport is
permitted to be attached to a residence, but windows between the carport and residence are not permitted to be openable. Where
windows are converted to unopenable. supplemental openable window area may be required for ventiliation. Doors between the
carport and residence shall be self-closing. No fire protection is required on the common wall between the carport and residence.
CONCRETE: Concrete shall consist of 1 part Portland cement, 3 parts sand, and 4 parts gravel, volumetric measure, with not more than
7>i gallons water per sack of cement.
LUMBER: Shall be Douglas Fir/Larch No 2 or better; all lumber shall be grade marked.
POST ANCHORAGE AND BRACING: The details shown on this sheet have been approved by the City of San Diego. Posts
shall be anchored at the lower end by any of the methods noted. They shall be braced to the upper end using any of the optional
methods shown. Decorative type bracing may be substituted for the above if the same amount of structural bracing is realized.
LEDGES TO HOUSE ATTACHMENT: When it is desired to connect and support one side of the structure by attaching it directly
to the house, the rafter spans and main beam sizes will still be as shown in the table. However, the main beam may be replaced on
the side attached to the house with a ledger the same size as the rafters and fastened to the studs with %" x 5" lag screws spaced
at 16 inches center to canter and centered on existing studs. Lag screws may be spaced at 32 inches center to center when rafter span does
not exceed 10. feat. It is not recommended to attach the rafters to the existing house rafters. If a ledger beam is not used, it is recommended
that the carport rafters be notched and placed directly on the top wall plate of the house and directly connected to existing rafters.
ROOF COVERING: If covered with nominal one-inch roof sheathing, the roof shall have rafters spaced not more than 32"
center to center. This spacing is the maximum span for %" net sheathing. The minimum roof slope shall be J4" in 1 foot. If
plywood roof sheathing is used, the spacing of the rafters shall be as follows:
5/16" plywood — 12" rafter spacing
3/8" plywood — 16" rafter spacing
1/2" plywood — 24" rafter'spacing
5/8" plywood — 32" rafter spacing
