It is our understanding that it is proposed to construct a second-story addition to the southern portion of the existing residence. The purpose of our investigation was to determine whether the existing footing foundations will provide safe support for the proposed addition. On February 26, 1979, our soil engineer was present at the site to inspect the footings exposed in excavations at three locations around the southern portion of the residence and to inspect and obtain samples of the foundation soils. The exposed perimeter foot- ings were approximately 12 inches in width and were founded approximately 12 inches below the adjacent ground surface. The soils exposed in the excavations consisted of dense silty sands. The results of a laboratory direct shear test performed on a relatively undisturbed representative sample of the foundation soils obtained from one of the test pits is attached.
