Carlsbad, California 6-1-04 Prepared by Pacific Design Group in collaboration with Affiliated Engineers 18071 Irvine Blvd., Tustin, Ca 92780 (714) 832-5100 PDG Project 0434 Initial Site Visit An initial site visit was made by Robert Ritner of Pacific Design Group, who was accompanied by Russ Drew of IBM and Tom Haugh of24-Ho-q.r Fitness on 5/17/04. The purpose of the site visit.was to review existing building drawings and collect field data necessary to determine placement of a new rooftop mounted Condenser that is to serve a new CAC unit in the existing data center. Building Data The building is a single story "tilt-up" structure of Type ill-N, fully spri_nkled construction with concrete ext~rior walls and steel interior columns. The primary roof structure is comprised of glue laminated timber beams, conventional wood purlins spanning between beams ·and a panelized roof joist and sheathing system that spans between purlins. The building occupancy is "B" -Office Use. No original building drawings were available for review. As such all of the structural information was obtained through field i~vestigation. Proposed Equipment Placement and Support Panelized roof systems are typically minimally engineered, and are typically "spongy", as is the case with this roof. Therefore the proposed equipment placement is above a column and bearing · on large wood purlins that were not already carrying large existing equipment loads. By optimizing the placement of the equipment th~re will be no structural upgrade to the primary building structure required. The new equipment may anchored .to the roof in a similar fashion to the three existing condenser units; whereby the unit is anchored to two wood sleepers on top of the roof with ends bearing at purlins below, which in tum is anchored to the supporting purlins. Attached following this page are existing structural plans of the area of work and the proposed placement of the condenser, followed by structural calculations indicating that the unit mJ:1.y be supported only with the additional sleepers on top of the roof. In order to properly support the new sleepers, the roofing must be peeled back to bare deck at the sleeper locations. The sleepers will be anchored and new roofing and metal cap installed over them. The equipment will then be anchored through the metal cap to the wood sleeper below.
