Mr. Rodman:
Construction Testing & Engineering, Inc. (CTE) has reviewed a foundation plan detail for
comparison to a material that has been chosen for installation on the subject project in Carlsbad,
California. We understand that the original design engineer of the foundation plans is out of the
country and unavailable to provide this review himself.
We reviewed detail 11 of sheet 2 of 4 sheets of the plans titled "Manufactured Home Foundation,
for: Hallmark Southwest, Inc." prepared by Wood Engineering, Inc., dated 5-5-08, no revisions.
Detail 11, "Alternate Gravel Footing," indicates that an "Approved Pier" may be underlain by a
layer of gravel, coarse sand, or crushed stone base. It indicates:
Gravel shall be washed and well graded. The maximum size stone shall not exceed V*".
Gravel shall be free from organic, clayey or silty soils.
You have asked whether "Class 2 Base" may be used in this application. In our professional
opinion, if the material meets the specifications for Caltrans Class 2 Aggregate Base, including
the "3/4" Maximum" Aggregate Grading Requirements from this specification, then this material
may be substituted for "Gravel" in this application.
