This wilt include building orientation, windows, entrances, walkways, landscape trees and shrubs, fences and any other physical obstruction. • Design the placement of persons and or activities to maximize surveillance possibilities. • Design lighting that provides for appropriate nighttime illumination of walkways, entrances and driveways. Natural Access Control • Use walkways, pavement treatments, lighting and landscaping to clearly guide guests to and from selected entrances • Use real or symbolic barriers like fences or landscaping to prevent and or discourage access to or from dark and or unmonitored areas . Provisions for Territorial Reinforcement Use pavement treatments, landscaping and fences to define and outline ownership or property . Show c:lean transformation between public and privat e space. • Maintenance • Use !ow-maintenance landscaping and lighting treatment to facilitate the principles of natural survei llance, natural access control and territorial reinforcement. • Maintenance included the maintenance of human behavior and use of the space. This could includ e security personnel or security systems. Light ing • All types of exterior doors should be illum inated during the hours of darkness, with a minimum maintained one (1) foot-candle of light, measured within a five-foot radius on each side of the door at ground level. • • • • • Recessed areas of buildings or fences, which have a minimum depth of two feet, a minimum height of five feet, and do not exceed six (6) feet in width and are capable of human concealment, should be illuminated with a minimum maintained 0.25 foot·candles of light at ground level during the hours of darkness. This recommendation applies to defined recessed areas, which are within six f eet of the edge of a designated \',.'alking surface with an unobstructed pathway to it, not hindered by walls or hedgerow landscaping a minimum of two (2) feet in height. All exterior pedestrian walkways, stairways, interior common corridors, external community areas and open parking areas should be illuminated with a minimum maintained one (1) foot· ca ndle of light on the walking or driving surface during the hours of darkness. Accessible luminaries should have vandal resistant light fixtures and be not less than three feet in height from ground level when used to illuminate walkways and a minimum of eight feet in height from ground level when illuminating surfaces associated with vehicles. Light fixtures should be deemed accessible if mounted within fifteen feet vertically or six feet horizontally from any accessible surface or any adjoining roof, balcony, !anding, sta ir tread platform or similar structure. Overhead light poles should not be placed in an area planted with shade trees or other canopy producing species. Only basic ground cover, including but not limited to hedges and shrubs, should be used. The parking and drive surface lighting should have a ra ted average bulb life of not less than 10,000 hours. Landscaping • • The basi c landscaping theme should consist of low ground cover with a maximum height of 1.5 feet and canopy trees with a minimum lower canopy of 8 feet. Do not Pli'.lce overhead light poles in an area planted with shade trees or other canopy producing species. Entrance Gates, Doors and Fencing • • • • Lobby • • • Doors • • • • • • • • All common entra nce gates and doors including internal doors, except the lobby' should have a 24 hour ma naged controlled access and electronic surveillance. Outer fencing should contain the property forcing non-guests to enter through the lobby . Fencing and gates should be protected in such a way to prevent a non-guest from reaching over the gate and accessing the push release. Gates and fencing should allow surveillance and sho uld include electronic surveillance . The registration desk should have a view af all guests entering the lobby and a person entering the lobby should be required to pass the registration desk to go anywhere in the hotel. The regist ration desk and any other area that handles cash should be equipped w it h a panic button and be under managed camera surveillance . It is recommended that the lobby in general and the registration area be under managed camera surveillance. Install hollow steel doors that are a minimum sixteen (16) U.S. gauge and have sufficient reinforcement to maintain the designed thickness of t he door when any locking device is installed. Only use glass doors with f ully tempered glass or rated burglary resistant gla2ing. Protect all exterior doors with security hardware. Equip all exterior doors with a latch cover constructed of steel. Ensure the latch cover is a minimum of .125 inch thick. Attach the latch cover to the outside by welding or with non- removable bolts spaced apart on not more than ten-inch centers. Construct the jamb of all al uminum frame-swinging doors to withsta nd 1600 pounds of pressure in both a vertical distance of three inches and horizontal distance of one inch each side afthe strike, to prevent violation of the strike. Equip rear doors used for shipping and receiving, employee entrances and guest rooms with a viewer. A single or double door shall be equipped with a double cyl inder deadbolt with a bolt projection exceed ing one inch or a hook·shaped or expanding deadbolt that engages the strike sufficiently to prevent spreading. The deadbolt lock shall have a minimum of five-pin tumblers and a cylinder guard. Inst all wooden doors of so lid core construction with a minimum thickness of one and three- fourths (1·3/4) inches. Provide a double door inactive leaf with metal flush bolts having a minimum embedment of five· • CT 16-03, RP 16-09, CDP 16-16 eighths (5/8) of an inch into the header and footer of the doorframe. Arrange guest room entrance doors so that the occupant has a view of the area immediately outside the door without opening t he door. Such a view may be provided by a door viewer having a field of view of not less than 190 degrees. Mounting height should not exceed fifty· four (54 ) inches from the floor. St rike Plates • Reinforce all deadbolt strike plates. Choose Strike pla tes constructed of a minimum 16 U.S. gauge steel, bronze, or brass and secure it to the jamb by a minimum of two screws, which should penetrate at least two (2) inches into t he solid backing beyond the surface to which the strike is attached. Window and slid ing glass doors • All exterior sliding glass doors and windows should be equipped with locking devices which will keep the sliding panel of the door or window from being opened from the outside horiz.ontally or vertically. Stairways • • • • Interior doors should have glazing panels a minimum of five inches wide and 20 inches in height and meet requirements of the Uniform Building Cod e. Areas beneath stairways at or be low ground level shall be full.,, enclosed or access to them restricted. Stair towers and elevators have been the highest risk far personal injury as they are typically enclosed. Stairways should be designed to be completely visible from either t he interior or exterior or both, unless mandated by t he Uniform Building Code to be enclosed. Ful ly enclosed Interior or exterior stairways with solid walls, when required, should have shatter resistant mirrors or other equally reflective material at each level and I.and ing and be designed or placed in such a manner as to provide visibility around corners Elevators • Elevator cabs wit h interiors that are not completely visible when the door is open from a point centered on and 36 inches away from the door, shall have shatter resistant mirrors or other equally reflective materic1 I so placed as to make visible the entire elevator cab from this point. • The elevator cab should be illuminated at all times with a minimum maintained two foot- candles of light at floor level. Special considerations for parking structures lighting • The model routine light standard in parking structures is 6-footcandles of uniform light at the ground level. Ta ke into consideration the illuminance, uniformity and glare. Natural Surveillance • • • • • • • Maximize flat parking areas and minimi2e ramps Long-span construction and high ceilings create openness and aid lighting . The openness of the fa~ade should be maximized . Pedestrian paths should be minimi2ed. Concentrating more people on less paths increased surveillance. Dead-end parking and nooks and crannies should be avoided Design stair towers and elevators as open as the code permits . Parking spaces should be defined at 90 degrees instead of 45 degrees . Access Control • • • • Signage • • Access control and perimeter security should be considered during the design state .
