Under general direction, to perform difficult field and office traffic engineering work in the design, construction and maintenance of public works facilities; to supervise and coordinate public works projects; and to do related work as assigned. D I STINGU I SllI NG CHARACTERISTICS This is the journey level class for professional traffic engineering work. Incumbents in this class perform difficult and complex work requiring prior professional traffic engineering work experience and may assist in the super- vision of other less experienced professional and paraprofessional staff. f I EXAMPLES OF DUTIES Supervise, perform and coordinate traffic engineering work involving the design and installati’on of transportation facilities such as traffic lighting, traffic control devices, bikeways, streets, parking facilities and other vehi cul ar and pedes tri an traff i c sys tems . Work with private devel opment engi neers and contractors to review plans and coordinate work involving traffic systems in privately constructed residential coininercial and Iadustrial projects. Coordinate: and ficipate in overall transit planning for the City. . Maintain up-to-date inventory of traffic control devices, streets and related transportati on el ements. Assist in the preparation of long-range capital improvement plans. I - EXAMPLES OF DUTIES 1 .a Supervise, plan, and participate in a varied program of work involving construction inspection, design coordination, and contract compliance for street, sewer, storm drain, water, curb, gutter, and other public facility capital design and construction projects. Assign, supervise, and coordinate the work of Construction Inspectors, Senior Construction Inspectors, Engineering Aides and others as assigned, involved in contract compliance and construction inspection work. Prepare and review bid documents, specifications, contracts and notices inviting bids for public facility design and construction work. Meet with and assist engineers, architects, contractors and others involved in preparing and interpreting construction plans, specifications and contractual agreements. Monitor ‘construction progress and participate in on-site field inspections of pro j ec ts under construct i on. Review and process progress billings for payment t.0 engineers, contractors and others involved in the construction of public works facilities, and assign and monitor the assignment of expenditures to the proper account classification. Coordinate private construction work with the work of City forces. Prepare construction cost estimates. Prepare detailed project status reports involving construction progress and expenditures. Assist contractors and engineers in the review and interpretation of plans and specifications for publ ic f aci 1 ity construction projects. Assist .in the review of progress payment billings and the assignment of progress payment expenditures to the proper account code. Perform a wide variety of general recordkeeping and statistical report prepar- ation work re1 ated to public facility construction projects. Assist in the preparation of construction progress status reports as assigned.
