RESOLUTION NO. 6603
A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE
CITY OF CARLSBAD, CALIFORNIA, AMENDING
THE CLASSIFICATION AND SALARY PLAN OF
THE CITY TO INCLUDE THE CLASSIFICATION OF AQUATIC SUPERVISOR
WHEREAS, the City Manager recommends and the City Council
:oncurs, that the classification of Aquatic Supervisor should be
included in the city's Classification and Salary Plan.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of the
:ity of Carlsbad, California, as follows:
1. That the above recitations are true and correct.
2. That the City Council authorizes and directs the City
4anager to add the classification of Aquatic Supervisor as describe1
in Attachment A, attached hereto and made a part thereof.
That the City Council authorizes and directs the City 3.
vlanager to add the title of Aquatic Supervisor to the appropriate
crity Salary Plan as shown on Attachment B, attached hereto and made

PASSED, APPROVED, AND ADOPTED at a regular meeting of the
Carlsbad City Council held on the 7th day of J~J, , 1981,

Resolution No. 6603 AQUATIC SUPERVISOR
DEFINITION
Under general direction, to perform professional recreation work in
the organization and supervision of a year round aquatics program and pool operation; and to do related work as required.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
Initiate, supervise, and participate in a variety of aquatic program activities.
Organize, schedule and staff senior, handicapped, adult, and children's
programs.
Coordinate and schedule aquatic activities with other city departments
and divisions, and with outside agencies.
Formulate and administer aquatic program budget.
Establish policies and procedures for safety, maintenanee,daily
operations, and scheduling.
Supervise, train, and evaluate assigned full and part time staff.
Recruit and select part time personnel.
Prepare periodic reports, and news releases.
Requisition supplies.
Recommend fees and charges to Recreation Superintendent.
Adjust and make minor repairs to heating and pumping equipment using
hand tools.
Perform minor plumbing repairs and advise maintenance worker in area of water chemistry.
Collect and deposit monies received.
Respond to citizen complaints and request for information.
Attend meetingsand assist in providing staff support to Parks and Recreation Commission, including preparation and presentation of
technical staff reports.
Serve as Acting Recreation Superintendent as assigned.

OUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge of:
Philosophy, principles, and practices of administration and aquatic recreation programs.
Aquatic and recreational activities suitable for children, adults,
handicapped, and senior citizens.
Principles and procedures of swimming pool maintenance, chlori-
nators, heaters, and other equipment and machinery necessary to operate and keep in repair a large swimming pool.
Chemicals used to purify water in a swimming pool and proper
application.
First aid methods, life saving, and safety precautions.
Principles of supervision, training, and evaluation.
Health and safety codes and standards applied in pool operation.
Teaching techniques.
Ability to:
Communicate clearly and concisely, orally, and in writing.
Organize, direct, and supervise a variety of aquatic programs.
Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with
those contacted in the course of work.
Interpret community aquatic needs.
Supervise and instruct individuals and groups in aquatic
activities.
Supervise, train, and evaluate assigned staff.
Experience and Education
Any combination equivalent to the experience and education that
could likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is
qualifying. would be:

Three years of experience involving the development,
conducting and supervision of recreation or aquatic

programs for all age groups, one year of which must have involved the supervision of aquatic programs.
Education
Equivalent to a bachelor's deqree from an accredited college - or university with major work in recreation or a related field.
Necessary Special Requirements
Possession of: 1. American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor
Certificate. Instructor rating desirable.
2. American Red Cross First Aid Card and Cardio- Pulmonary Resuscitation. Instructor rating desirable and required within one year of
employment,
3. Valid Class I11 California Driver's License.
