2 A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE
CITY OF CARLSBAD, CALIFORNIA, APPROVING A
3 WINNING TEAMS GRANTS FOR THE CARLSBAD
HIGH SCHOOL BOYS' WATER POLO TEAM AND
APPROPRIATING FUNDS

6 WHEREAS, the City Council adopted Council Policy No. 51 which deals with the
7 process for funding community activities; and
8 WHEREAS, under Section 5 of Council Policy No. 51, the Winning Teams Grant
9 provides funding to youth teams to offset the cost of travel expenses to national
10 championship competitions; and
11 WHEREAS, the Carlsbad High School ("CHS") Boys' Water Polo team has
12
submitted a letter requesting funding under the Winning Teams Grant for their
13
international training and tournament trip to Budapest, Hungary; and
14
WHEREAS, a support request for international trainings and tournaments differs

with the intent of national championship competition support as set forth in the Winning
17 Teams Grant; and
18 WHEREAS, the cost for 17 athletes to attend the international training and
19 tournament is $2,800 per person for a total cost of $47,600; and
20 WHEREAS, the 17 athletes are participating in funding their way; and
21 WHEREAS, the 17 athletes attending the international training and tournament
22 are requesting funding for one-half the cost of the trip: $1,400 per person for a total
23
request of $23,800; and
24
WHEREAS, if Council chooses to provide funding, the request can be funded in
25
whole or in part; and26
27 WHEREAS, all eligibility requirements for the Winning Teams Grant have been

1 NOW, THEREFORE, IT IS HEREBY RESOLVED AS FOLLOWS:
2 1. That the above recitals are all true and correct.
3 2. That the Finance Director is authorized to appropriate
4
$ 19,000 from Council contingency to the CHS Boys' Water
5
Polo team for the Winning Teams Grant.

PASSED, APPROVED AND ADOPTED at a Regular Meeting of the City Council
of the City of Carlsbad on the 2nd day of June, 2009, by the following vote to wit:
AYES: Council Members Lewis, Kulchin, Hall, Packard and Blackburn.
NOES: None.
ABSENT: None.
