A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF CARLSBAD,
CALIFORNIA, APPROVING THE CITY'S PARTICIPATION IN THE INSTITUTE FOR
LOCAL GOVERNMENT'S BEACON PROGRAM AND DESIGNATING AN
ELECTED OFFICIAL AS THE CITY'S BEACON PROGRAM REPRESENTATIVE.
WHEREAS, the City Council of the City of Carlsbad, California has adopted a Climate Action Plan
and is undertaking policies, programs and activities to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and save
energy; and
WHEREAS, these policies, programs and activities conserve natural resources, save energy and
money, and promote sustainable land uses and transportation planning in the community; and
WHEREAS, cities and counties statewide are leading by example by adopting innovative
sustainability programs and policies, including working with community residents, business groups and
others; and
WHEREAS, the City of Carlsbad desires to continue and expand these activities, share its
experiences with other communities and be recognized for its accomplishments; and
WHEREAS, the Beacon Program is a voluntary program of the Institute for Local Government,
the non-profit research and education affiliate of the California State Association of Counties and the
League of California Cities; and
WHEREAS, the Beacon Program recognizes and celebrates achievements of cities and counties
that reduce greenhouse gas emissions and save energy; and
WHEREAS, participating in the Beacon Program is an opportunity for the City of Carlsbad to be
recognized for its efforts to promote sustainability, reduce greenhouse gas emissions and save energy.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of the City of Carlsbad, California, as
follows:
1. That the above recitations are true and correct.
2. That the City of Carlsbad agrees to participate in the Beacon Program.
3. That the City of Carlsbad will work towards achieving the Silver, Gold and/or Platinum
Beacon Award levels.
4. That the City Council designates Council Member Cori Schumacher to serve as the city's
representative for Beacon Program activities.
PASSED, APPROVED AND ADOPTED at a Regular Meeting of the City Council of the City of
Carlsbad on the 20th day of June, 2017, by the following vote, to wit:
AYES: M. Hall, M. Schumacher, C. Schumacher, M. Packard
NOES: None.
ABSENT: K. Blackburn
