HomeMy WebLinkAbout1968-06-05; Municipal Water District; Resolution 225RESOLUTION NO. 225 A RESOLVTION OF THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS OF CARLSBAD MUNICIPAL WATER DISTRICT REGARDING AGRICULTURAL WATER AS IT AFFECTS FLOWER GROWERS OF THE CARLSBAD MUNICIPAL WATER DISTRICT WHEREAS, a considerable amount of public funds have been utilized I for recreational purposes as part of our development of water resources state- wide which has a direct benefit to the human being other than "consumption"; and, I l WHEREAS, this District considers the floral industry to be a bona fide "agricultural purpose" which materially benefits the human being; and, WHllREAs, the flower growers of the Carlsbad Municipal Water District are the largest users of agricultural water in the said District; and, WHEREAS, the commercial flower growing industry of San Diego County has an annual gross income near $20,000,000; and, ! WHEREAS, the flower growers have the largest payroll in the District strictly dependent upon Colorado River water; and, 1 - WHEREAS, the flower growers have some of the largest capital invest- ments in buildings and equipment in the District; and, WHEREAS, the Metropolitan Water District's definition of "agricultural purpose" does not include flower growing as an agricultural product of a vital nature such as food and fiber and, therefore, not entitled to the cheaper rate on agricultural water; and, WHEREAS, it is our opinion that many other agricultural products such as hay grown for race horses (as distinguished from hay grown for cattle feed), strawberries, avocados, or other exotic foods or fibers, might be classed in the same catagory as flowers, "not really a necessity". NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Board of Directors of the Carlsbad Municipal Water District go on record as requesting the Metropolitan Water District ruling be modified to permit commercial flower growing to be classified as an "agricultural purpose". - BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this Board respectfully requests that the Board of Directors of the San Diego County Water Authority support our above resolution before the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California. ADOPTED, SIGNED AM, APPROVED this 5th day of June, 1968.
