Executive Summary This report provides an overview and examples of an arts commission workplan. Discussion Cultural Arts Manager Richard Schultz will recap the City Council’s request for each board and commission to create a workplan for FY2019-2020. Two examples of workplans from other cities are provided, as well as a template. Fiscal Analysis No additional city funding is being requested at this time. Next Steps The Arts Commissioners will be asked to review a draft of the workplan at the April meeting. Public Notification This document was noticed in accordance with the Ralph M. As advisors and arts stewards, our focus will increase on key issues facing our city; racial justice, economic development, education, livability and affordability. The Seattle Arts Commission will also continue the foundation it has built of using a racial equity lens to do our work while expanding that focus into new funding opportunities and content areas. With an additional 10 percent admissions tax being dedicated to ARTS, and with the impending move to King Street Station, the Seattle Arts Commission has the unique opportunity to lead the City through continuing community engagement, equity actions and cultural space preservation, for the benefit of all Seattle residents. Advocacy • Create a legislative Agenda (Local/Regional/National) / Policy Agenda • Be at the table for the livability conversation across the city – Work on HALA alignment/Homelessness and Social Justice • Develop a partnership with the new Office of Planning and Community Development as a way to embed arts in neighborhood planning • Increase Seattle’s visibility as an arts city by anchoring King Street Station as a model for diverse community arts space Community Development and Outreach • Act as a focus group for Cultural Access Washington (CAWA), specifically working to increase visibility of the initiative to small to mid-sized art organizations. • Work with ArtsFund and Leadership Tomorrow in training people for board and commission participation. • Continue to ask artists to present each month at Seattle Arts Commission meetings • Work to garner increased media coverage of the arts Facilities and Economic Development • Serve as the bridge between the community and the Office by brainstorming and convening the appropriate community stakeholders for outreach and engagement related to King Street Station • Host a Square Feet/ King Street Station joint convening • Use King Street Station as a model to establish cultural space development values in Seattle Public Art Advisory Committee • Review the public art process from beginning to end and look for structural barriers • Create norms for the evaluation process that allow for greater equity in selection and concept review • Explore ways that King Street Station can be a hub for the cultural community Youth + Community • Resource and expand the City of Music Super Internship program and work to align with the Mayor’s youth employment goals • Host a City of Music Career Day meeting to reflect on past years, and to plan/rebrand the 2017 event • Host three community outreach events throughout Seattle with the following goals; host in a location that is accessible to communities of color and traditionally underinvested communities, plan each event using the Racial Equity Tool kit, and gathering community feedback about arts and music related issues that the commission can use for advocacy tools.
