Executive Summary This report recaps recent events and provides a preview of upcoming programs. Discussion RECENT EVENTS Front Row Fridays: The Library at Night with Colin McAllister April 12 Sponsored by the Carlsbad Library & Arts Foundation and drawing inspiration from Alberto Manguel’s The Library at Night, a series of essays on the idea of the library, Colin McAllister’s captivating recital took the listener on a literary, musical and historical journey through time and place. The compelling selection of music included masters of medieval, Renaissance and Baroque polyphony, the first “Golden Age” of the guitar, sensual rhythms from Latin America and a newly commissioned work, Spines, by award-winning composer Christopher Adler. The audience of 80 experienced a diverse evening of music and literature performed by two excellent musicians that was both entertaining and thought-provoking. Starring Artists: San Diego Symphony – Piano and Violin April 27 Sponsored by the Carlsbad Friends of the Arts. series Host Nina Garin, Arts Calendar Editor and Producer with KPBS, interviewed a violinist and pianist with the San Diego Symphony. With 50 in attendance, two musicians, Nuvi Mehta and Bryan Verhoye, were interviewed and performed works by Bach, Ravel, Chopin and Gershwin. Violinist and conductor Mehta is the Artistic Director of the Ventura Music Festival, concert commentator for the San Diego Symphony, and Director of the ECHO Chamber Series and is widely considered one of the finest educators on classical music. Violinist Mehta is a graduate of Indiana University and The Juilliard School. Verhoye is a concert pianist who trained at the USC School of Music, the Aspen Music School, and the Peabody Conservatory. He has won first-prize awards from the International Piano Recording Competition and the Carmel Music Society, as well as multiple awards from the Musical Merit Foundation of San Diego. The interview included audience questions, while the performance was well-received and prompted rave reviews as the audience exited the Schulman Auditorium. Foreign Films Attendance Apr. 5: English Vinglish (Comedy/Drama from India) 324 Apr. 14: The Salt of the Earth (Documentary from Brazil) 120 Apr. 19: No film due to holidays. ~ ARTS COMMISSION ~ Staff Report UPCOMING EVENTS Family Open Studios: May 4 from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. In connection with the current Cannon Gallery exhibit, Entre Tinta y Lucha: 45 Years of Self-Help Graphics & Art, will be held in the courtyard of the Carlsbad City Library on Dove Lane. Families are invited to tour the Gallery and then create their own art inspired by the exhibit. Front Row Fridays: The Filharmonic May 10 at 7:00 p.m. Sponsored by the Carlsbad Library & Arts Foundation, The Filharmonic, an LA-based a cappella group of Filipino-American performers who were featured in NBC’S hit musical competition, The Sing-Off, has much to sing about. The five-piece vocal group were featured in the Universal Pictures hit movie, Pitch Perfect 2, and were a viral sensation after their first Late Late Show appearance and have since become a recurring act, performing alongside the likes of James Cordon, Neil Patrick Harris, Anna Kendrick and more. The Filharmonic brings their unique blend of hip hop, pop and 90's nostalgia and was named the number one college booked entertainment group in 2016. Starring Artists: Old Town Improv May 25 at 2:00 p.m. Sponsored by the Carlsbad Friends of the Arts, the actors at Old Town Improv, Co. are folks that love improv, and the family-friendly shows are completely unscripted. No plans, and no safety nets; just consistently great comedy from some of San Diego's most experienced improvisors. This event will include insight into the process of improv, how anyone can utilize the power of ‘yes’ in daily life. Foreign Film Fridays Friday, May 3 at 4:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. Strictly Ballroom (Australia, Music, Comedy, PG, 1992) A maverick dancer risks his career by performing an unusual routine and sets out to succeed with a new partner. Friday, May 17 at 4:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. Marshland (Spain, Crime, Thriller, MA, 2014) Two homicide detectives with deep divisions in their ideology must put aside their differences to bring a serial killer to justice. Fiscal Analysis No additional city funding is being requested at this time. Next Steps Arts Commissioners are invited to attend all events and programs.
