Executive Summary This report recaps recent events and provides a preview of upcoming programs. Discussion RECENT EVENTS Front Row Fridays: The Philharmonic May 10 The Filharmonic, an LA-based a cappella group of Filipino-American performers who were featured in NBC’s hit musical competition, The Sing-Off, wowed a sold-out house with their unique blend of hip hop, pop and ‘90s nostalgia, impressive harmonies, musical versatility and humorous narration. The five-piece vocal group was featured in the Universal Pictures hit movie, Pitch Perfect 2, and were a viral sensation after their first Late Late Show appearance and have since become a recurring act, performing alongside the likes of James Cordon, Neil Patrick Harris, Anna Kendrick and more. After the concert, a small crowd of enthusiastic audience members waited in the courtyard to meet and take photographs with these talented young men. Starring Artists: Old Town Improv May 25 Sponsored by the Carlsbad Friends of the Arts, series Host Nina Garin, Arts Calendar Editor and Producer with KPBS, interviewed founder and artistic director Donny Dunstone. After a lively and funny interview, a troupe of improvisational performers delighted the audience of over fifty with games fueled by suggestions from the audience. Several audience members joined the troupe onstage to participate in one of the games. The performance was well-received and prompted rave reviews as the audience exited the Schulman Auditorium including questions about the possibility of adult improv classes in Carlsbad. Family Open Studio (with Gallery exhibit- Entre Tinta y Lucha: 45 Years of Self-Help Graphics & Art) May 4: 179 UPCOMING EVENTS Front Row Fridays: Turn It Up Band Competition on June 14 at 7:00 p.m. Sponsored by the Carlsbad Library & Arts Foundation, two local bands will perform live and compete for a package of prizes including appearing as the opening band for the July 5th TGIF Concert in the Parks at Stagecoach Park. Through a partnership with the Museum of Making Music and Mira Costa Community College, local bands with members ages 18-25 were encouraged to submit an application for a chance to be a finalist. TGIF Concerts in the Parks: June 21 and 28 The 34th season launches at Stagecoach Community Park with Safety Orange, a surf rock band, on June 21 and Uptown Funk, a Bruno Mars Tribute, on June 28. Informational postcards with the entire TGIF season are now available. Foreign Film Fridays June 7: The Motorcycle Diaries (Biography from Argentina) 2004 The dramatization of a motorcycle road trip Che Guevara went on in his youth that showed him his life’s calling. June 21: Borg vs McEnroe (Sport from Sweden) 2017 The story of the 1980 tennis rivalry between the placid Bjorn Born and the volatile John McEnroe. Fiscal Analysis No additional city funding is being requested at this time. Next Steps Arts Commissioners are invited to attend all events and programs.
