Recent Events
Turn It Up Band Competition
The performance series, Front Row Fridays, concluded with Turn It Up, a new band competition for local
groups with members between the ages of 18 and 25. The event was co-sponsored by the Museum of
Making Music and Mira Costa College with additional support from the Carlsbad Library & Arts
Foundation and the Carlsbad Friends of the Arts. Two finalists performed; the winner, Courtney Preis
Duo, will perform in the pre-show entertainment at TGIF Concerts in the Parks at Calavera Hills
Community Park on August 2.

The current exhibit, Light and Space: Contemporary Continuations, opened on Saturday, June 22 with
165 guests in attendance. The show, featuring three local artists, runs through August 25.
Summer Camps
Club Pelican unites science and art unite in one amazing camp located at the Batiquitos Lagoon. The
programs run Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to noon daily. Each of the camps listed below have full
registration of 30 campers with a waiting list:
• June 17-21, 2019 (Age: 7-9)
• June 24-28, 2019 (Age: 7-9)
• July 22-26, 2019 (Age: 7-9)
• July 29-Aug. 2, 2019 (Age: 9-12)
Creative Arts Camp (July 8-19) emphasizes a collaboration of the visual arts and theatre. With a full
camp of 30 participants (ages 9-12) and a waiting list, this year’s theme was science fiction. A final
presentation was staged on Friday, July 19 at 2:00 p.m. in the Schulman Auditorium.

Musical Theatre Camp (July 22-26) is an acting intensive experience with guest artists from North Coast
Repertory Theater of Solana Beach. This one-week camp for ages 12-14 took 20 students from the
audition process all the way through a performance of School House Rock Live Jr., based on the award-
winning 1970s cartoons. A free performance was presented on Friday, July 26 at 2:30 p.m. in the
Schulman Auditorium.
Mobile Outreach Strategy
On July 1, nine members of the Cultural Arts team toured two mobile vehicles at the LA Museum of
Natural History. Museums staff shared best practices, procedures and documents related to the
operations of the vehicles.

TGIF Concerts in the Parks
Calavera Hills Community Park
• July 26: Rumba Y Soul
Rumba Y Soul’s salsa clásica will make your body move. This 10-piece band plays cumbia,
merengue and bachata with music influences by artists Celia Cruz, Eddie and Charlie Palmieri
and El Gran Combo de Puerto Rico.
• August 2: Unsteady
Formed in Southern California, Unsteady blends ska and reggae with a dash of geek, lounge and
funky soul with horns, organ, driving bass and drums.
Alga Norte Community Park
• Aug. 9: Gene Evaro Jr.
Hailing from Joshua Tree, California, Gene Evaro Jr mixes soul, folk, electronic and funk with the
dexterity of Earth, Wind & Fire and retro fashions of Sly & The Family Stone. Evaro sings, plays
and leads in a style that embodies Prince.
• Aug. 16: 80z All Starz / Cassie B’s 90s Remix

It’s a duel of the decades. The 80z All-Stars are the premiere tribute act, and Cassie B’s 90s remix
electrifies the stage. Sing your heart out to your favorite decade jams and come dressed in your
best vintage look
