Executive Summary This report recaps recent events and provides a preview of upcoming programs. Discussion RECENT EVENTS Mobile Outreach On August 11, Cultural Arts partnered with the Village Association to bring Family Open Studios and the mobile stage to the street art fair. Over 600 participants created art inspired by Picasso at Family Open Studios. As part of Mobile Outreach, the mobile stage was located on Christensen (in front of New Village Arts Theater) to activate the area as an entertainment zone. Event attendance was estimated at over 5,000. Carlsbad Beach Chair The first Carlsbad Beach Chair was unveiled on Sunday, August 11 during Art in the Village. Six Arts Commissioners, Carlsbad artist Ron Juncal, Cultural Arts staff members and community members were in attendance. Located across from the fountain near the intersection of State Street and Grand Avenue, the chair’s popularity was immediately evident with many festival-goers sitting in the chair to take selfies. A plaque will be installed including a new Carlsbad Beach Chair hashtag. TGIF Concerts in the Parks This popular summer concert series closed its 34th season on Friday, August 16 at Alga Norte Community Park featuring two bands, 80z All Starz and Cassie B’s 90s Remix. Billed as a duel of the decades, over 4,500 community members enjoyed this retro flashback. The TGIF season audience total was 30,396 and 2,635 young artists participating at Family Open Studios. In September, the Cultural Arts staff will be conducting debrief sessions with city partners including Parks & Rec, Police, Public Works, Streets and Communications. Cole Library Mural On Thursday, August 22, a temporary public art committee comprised of three Arts Commissioners and four community members selected the conceptual design by Carlsbad artist Jason Markow who is known for the “robot mural” in the Carlsbad Village and other local artworks. The mural is scheduled to begin work in October in conjunction with National Arts & Humanities Month. 2 Public Art Coordinator This new position has been posted on the city’s website, Indeed.com and other job search websites. The position closes September 23. UPCOMING EVENTS Foreign Film Fridays September 6 @ 4 & 7 p.m. Amélie France, Comedy/Romance, 2001 A shy, lonely French woman plays cupid to the colorful characters in her life, performing one random act of kindness after another. September 20 @ 4 & 7p.m. The Tobacconist Austria, Drama, 2018 A tender story about a young man and his friendship with Sigmund Freud during the Nazi occupation of Vienna. Ansel Adams: Early Works Exhibit September 22 – December 1, 2019 Intimate master prints from the 1920’s through the 1950’s depict Adams’s transition from pictorialism to straight photography and provide a fresh look at this legendary master of the American landscape. Presenting 42 photographs, several singular examples are included in this exhibition, including an extraordinary rare print of Moonrise, Hernandez, NM, 1941, and Clearing Winter Story, 1938, Adams’s most celebrated Yosemite view. Guest Artist Residency Residency Dates: Tuesday, Oct. 8 through Sunday, Oct. 12 Ken Waldman, Alaska’s Fiddler Poet, has drawn on his 30 years in Alaska to produce poems, stories, and fiddle tunes that combine into a performance uniquely his. A former college professor, Waldman has published six full-length poetry collections, a memoir, a children's book, and has released nine CDs that mix old-time Appalachian-style string-band music with original poetry. Since 1995, he’s toured full-time, performing at some of the nation’s leading universities, festivals, arts centers, and clubs. With both his fiddle and a repertoire of proven writing exercises, he has led workshops in over 200 schools in 31 states nationwide and has been a guest writer at over 80 colleges and universities. Fiscal Analysis No additional city funding is being requested at this time. Next Steps Arts Commissioners are invited to attend all events and programs.
