Starring Artists
On Saturday, Oct. 5, Michael Paul Smith presented his one man show, A Tribute to Paul Robeson, which
featured dramatic spoken word and the performance of songs from Paul Robeson’s career, including Old
Man River. Attended by an audience over 85, Smith captured the incredible story of the civil rights icon,
attorney, football star and worldwide concert artist and actor.

Guest Artist Residency
Guest artist Ken Waldman, Alaska’s Fiddler Poet, performed throughout Carlsbad from Tuesday, Oct. 8
through Sunday, Oct. 12. His schedule included 13 events with a total audience of 585.
UPCOMING EVENTS
Front Row Fridays
The Corvelles Friday, Nov. 8, 7 p.m.
Flashback to the 1960s and the musical heyday of girl groups with The Corvelles, a high energy show band
featuring three girls up front with a full rhythm section and horns. Together, they provide a dynamic
Motown revue that includes songs from your favorite girl groups such as The Shirelles, Martha Reeves

and The Vandellas and The Supremes. The Corvelles show is a sensation, recalling a special time in popular
music.

Community Arts Grants
Grant review panels for the 2020 grant cycle will be held on Wednesday, November 13 and Friday, Nov.
15.
Community Arts Grant Funded Project
Funded by the Carlsbad Community Arts Grants, Aging Out, a documentary by Melissa Collins-Porter, will
be screened on Nov. 22 at 6 p.m. in the Schulman Auditorium. This film will look at the issues that confront
young autistic adults through personal stories and to answer the growing question of how autistic adults
can find a place for themselves in a society that may not be prepared for their needs. This Carlsbad
premiere of this screening will be followed by Q&A.
Public Art Coordinator
Final interviews for this new position will be held on November 20 and 21. This new Cultural Arts member
will join the team in early 2020.
Fiscal Analysis
No additional city funding is being requested at this time.
Next Steps
Arts Commissioners are invited to attend all events and programs.
