Executive Summary This report recaps a staff member’s experience at the 82nd Annual Conference for Community Arts Education in Austin, Texas from October 30 to November 2, 2019, as well as offering insights into the current arts education approach by Cultural Arts. Discussion Community Arts Coordinator Laurette Garner will share information on an annual arts education conference presented by the National Guild for Community Arts Education. Over 600 arts education leaders and 75 young artists came together to form a powerful learning community and to ensure all people have opportunities to maximize their creative potential. Topics and themes included were: •Arts Justice - Reframing Arts Education as a Civil & Human Right; •Intergenerational Leadership; •Arts Integration Academic Mindsets, and; •Celebrating Artful Aging Through Performance and Conversation. Conference activities included a site visit to a Day of the Dead Festival at an Arts Education facility in San Antonio, Texas. Cultural Arts’ approach to arts education utilizes research from The Artful Thinking Program and the Eight Studio Habits of Mind to support programs for schools. These two approaches are key components of the Three-Part Art program at the Cannon Art Gallery and the California History and Art program in partnership with the Parks & Rec Department at the Leo Carrillo Ranch. The purpose of Harvard University’s Artful Thinking Program is to help teachers regularly use works of art (and music) in their curriculum in ways that strengthen student thinking and learning. Studio Thinking (also developed at Harvard University) identifies the broad thinking dispositions, or Habits of Mind, that visual arts teachers use in their classes. This program seeks to empower students to identify their artistic process in order to better understand their choices and build creative skills appropriate to art and other content areas.
