ITEM EXPLANATION: At its 3-18-08 meeting, The CTBID board established a formal grant program. The objectives of the grant program are to: Fund projects or events that are going to increase the overnight stays in hotels; Encourage the development of innovative tourism products; Promote collaboration within and across sectors of the tourism industry; Reach important travel segments such as multicultural, family and senior markets; Strengthen the marketing capacity of our partnering organizations; and Combine the resources of the CTBID and its tourism partners to leverage their collective marketing efforts. • The CTBID Board appropriated $50,000 in its 2012-13 budget to fund these grants. The following amounts were awarded: $5,000 to In Motion Events, the producers of the Carlsbad Marathon, $5,000 to the producers of the San Diego Jazz Festival, a new event held at La Costa Resort this year, $20,000 to the Carlsbad 5000, and $20,000 to the Mercury Insurance Open Tennis Toumament held at La Costa. A requirement of the grant is that the recipient must submit a final report detailing how the money was spent and the results of the event. Attached at Exhibits 1, 2, 3 and 4 are the final reports from each of the grant recipients. FISCAL IMPACT: The CTBID 2012-13 Budget contains an appropriation of $50,000 for CTBID grants. No further appropriation is required. ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT: This action does not qualify as a project under the California Environment Quality Act ("CEQA") and will not have a physical adverse effect on the environment. In 2011, a survey of event attendees was taken by the San Diego State Sports Business Management MBA Program showed that: 25% of Mercury Insurance Open ticket buyers were from outside of San Diego County • • • • 10% were from out of state 3% were international. 21% of survey respondents also indicated that they were staying at a local hotel while they were in town attending the tournament. •-—•'If"—•"•-gsjs'g; —. 12 WEBSITE RESULTS During the week of the 2012 tournament, July 14 - 22, mercuryinsuranceopen.com had: • 105,595 visits • 57,346 unique visitors • 318,592 page views • - ...^^i-.s';. i r% 1^r- Roughly 50 local, national and international journalists came to the Mercury Insurance Open to cover the event. These included print, online and broadcast journalists as well as photographers. Local print and online publications including The San Diego Union Tribune and North County Times typically wrote one to two daily articles on the Mercury Insurance Open, which were featured on the front pages ofthe sports section and sports websites. The Associated Press also did a daily story on tournament action, which was picked up by sites like Yahoo! Sports, ESPN.com, Sl.com and major newspapers across the nation. A total of more than 188 million print and web impressions are estimated over the tournament. The five local broadcast stations ran results round-ups nightly but also honed in on the special event held on the flight deck of the USS Midway. Overall, more than 1.6 million broadcast impressions are estimated over the tournament. CON'T The tournament surpassed more than 2,400 fans "liking" its Facebook fan page, resulting in more than 50,000 impressions. In addition, the WTA fan page, with roughly 973,000 followers posted five things about the tournament, resulting in more than 4.8 million impressions. Finally, more than 2.7 million impressions were generated on Twitter for the Mercury Insurance Open. The 2012 Mercury Insurance Open produced close to 200,000,000 media impressions. Known as the 'World's Fastest 5k', the event is the home of the current world 5K road records: 13:00, Sammy Kipketer (KEN), 2000 & 2001, and 14:46, Meseret Defar (ETH), 2006. It is the only road race from a commonly run distance in the world that is home to the world records and its home country records for both genders. Dejen was also silver medalist at the World Championships in Daegu in 2011. Dejen best 5000m time is 12:46.81 set last year in France. Leo became the Olympic silver medalist over 1500m at London 2012. Over the same distance he was NCAA champion in 2005 and 2008, and one mile champion in 2007 and 2008. This was Leo's debut at the distance. Hagos won the World Junior Cross Country title in Poland. Hagos was runner-up here last year running 13:14 setting a world junior record. He set another record over 5000m last year and has added another one running 7:32.87 indoors in Boston this year.
