RECOMMENDED ACTION:
Approve the recommendation by the Visitcarlsbad Board to appoint Mr. Mike Swyney to its
Board.
ITEM EXPLANATION:
At its 5-22-14 meeting, the Carlsbad Tourism Business Improvement District (CTBID) Board
entered into an agreement w\h the Carlsbad Convention and Visitors Bureau (dba Visitcarlsbad)
to provide tourism promotion services for the CTBID for the period July 1, 2014 through June 30,
2015. A provision in this contract was that the CTBID Board had to approve any changes to the
Visitcarlsbad Board.
In a letter from Visitcarlsbad Board Executive Director, Sam Ross, to CTBID Board Chair, Tim
Stripe, the Visitcarlsbad Board is recommending that the CTBID Board approve the appointment
of Mr. Mike Swyney, Vice President Sales and Marl<etlng for the Hilton Carlsbad Oceanfront
Resort & Spa, to fill the seat vacated by Mr. Don Chock on the Visitcarlsbad Board of Directors.

FISCAL IMPACT:
None.
ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT:
This action does not qualify as a project under the California Environment Quality Act ("CEQA")
and will not have a physical adverse effect on the environment. (CEQA Regulation 15378(b).

The Board of Directors of Visit Carlsbad, Carlsbad's destination marketing
organization would like to put forth Mr. Mike Swyney, Vice President Sales and
Marketing for the Hilton Carlsbad Oceanfront Resort & Spa, as the
replacement for the seat vacated by Mr. Don Chock on the Visit Carlsbad
board of directors.
Per the agreement between the CTBID and Visit Carlsbad we ask that the
CTBID board approve Mr. Swyney at the next CTBID meeting to be held on

Mr. Michael Swyney has just been appointed Vice President of Sales & Marketing for Wave Crest
Hotels and Resort in Carlsbad Califomia. Michael comes with 30 years of hospitality experience
starting in 1985 as a dishwasher. Michael spent nearly half of his career experiencing a variety of
hotel and resort food and beverage positions before starting his sales and marketing career.
Michael's experience expands up and down the coast of Califomia, Texas, Oregon, Arizona,
Colorado, New Jersey. Michael has also spent time as a sales & marketing and training consultant
including Canada and China. Michael has lived in Carlsbad for five years with wife Jennifer where
they met at San Francisco State University. Jennifer runs a successful home based business and is
heavily involved in Cartsbad schools churches and music programs. His children Kaiden and Kelsey,
are honored student/athletes in Carisbad and join many camps and music programs. Both are now
playing competitive soccer for the new Carisbad United Futbol Club and Friday Night Lights each
spring.
