Approve Appointment to GENERAL 8-1-18 Visit Carlsbad Board COUNSEL
RECOMMENDED ACTION:
Approve the recommendation by the Visit Carlsbad Board to appoint to its Board.
ITEM EXPLANATION:

At its 5-23-18 meeting, the Carlsbad Tourism Business Improvement District (CTBID) Board
entered into an agreement with the Carlsbad Convention and Visitors Bureau (dba Visit Carlsbad)
to provide tourism promotion services for the CTBID for the period July 1, 2018 through June 30,
2019. A provision in this contract was that the CTBID Board had to approve any changes to the
Visit Carlsbad Board.
In a letter from Visit Carlsbad Executive Director, Sam Ross, to CTBID Board Chair, Tim Stripe,
the Visit Carlsbad Board is recommending that the CTBID Board approve the appointment of Mr.
Ken Gray, Director of Marketing for the Shoppes at Carlsbad to fill the seat vacated by Mrs.Linda
Hopkins, from the West Inn. (See letter and Bio at attached Exhibits)
FISCAL IMPACT:
None.
ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT:
This action does not qualify as a project under the California Environment Quality Act ("CEQA")
and will not have a physical adverse effect on the environment. (CEQA Regulation 15378(b ).

The Board of Directors of Visit Carlsbad, Carlsbad's destination marketing
organization would like to put forth Mr. Ken Gray, Director of Marketing for the
Shoppes at Carlsbad as the replacement for Mrs. Linda Hopkins on the Visit
Carlsbad board.
Per the agreement between the CTBID and Visit Carlsbad we ask that the
CTBID board approve Mr. Gray at the next CTBID meeting to be held on

Ken Gray is currently the Director of Marketing with The Shoppes at Carlsbad, a 1.1 million square foot
Regional Shopping Center in North San Diego County owned by Brookfield Properties. Ken is responsible
for leading The Shoppes at Carlsbad by coordinating, overseeing and implementing all aspects of the
center's marketing and communications plan including advertising, public relations and special event
planning. His primary objectives are to drive sales, traffic and increase tourism and economic ' development.
The Shoppes at Carlsbad is currently undergoing a multi-phase redevelopment of the center which will
include the addition of brand-new retail, dining and entertainment tenants. Ken was hired as the
Marketing Director at this high-profile property due to his years of his industry experience as well as his
familiarity with the North San Diego County market. As a longtime resident of Carlsbad, he understands
the importance of tourism to our community as well as to the retail and hospitality industry.
Before coming to the Shoppes at Carlsbad, Ken was Director of Marketing at Parkway Plaza, a Starwood
Retail Partner property in East County. Ken was active with the East County Chamber of Commerce and
served as Chair of the Marketing Committee which oversees the "Sunny Side of San Diego" East County
tourism team. While Ken enjoyed being active in East County, he is ecstatic to get the opportunity to
work in the same community where he has lived for nearly 20 years.
Ken holds a BSBA Degree with an emphasis in Communications from Northwest Nazarene University.
