This is an informational item and no action is required.
ITEM EXPLANATION:
The San Diego County Water Authority voted on March 9 to raise the Authority’s wholesale
water rate from $70 to $80 per acre foot as of July 1. This coupled with the Metropolitan
Water District’s increase in wholesale water rates by $14 per acre foot, will raise the cost of
water that Carlsbad purchases by $24 per acre foot. The increase could raise the typical
residential water bill in Carlsbad by 6 cents (.068) per unit or about $1.80 per month.
One of the reasons the wholesale rate is going up is to increase revenue to pay for Capital
Improvement Projects of Metropolitan and the Water Authority already completed or in
progress. San Diego County Water Authority recently sent out a letter to member agencies
advising them of the rate increases and providing some explanation.
Staff has requested that a representative from the Water Authority be present at tonights
meeting to provide a briefing on Metropolitan and Water Authority rate increases.
FISCAL IMPACT:
There is no fiscal impact at this time. This is an informational item. Staff will be addressing
this issue during budget presentations.
