RECOMMENDED ACTION:
This item is an informational item and there is no Board action required.
ITEM EXPLANATION:
CalFed, a group of state and federal agencies, released in June a “Framework for Action” that
represents a significant step toward solving the problems that plague the San Francisco
Bay/Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta Estuary, one of the San Diego region’s water sources.
The documents describes itself as a “blueprint” for solving “conflicts among competing
demands for Delta water supplies.” It is the result of high-level discussions among federal and
state government representatives that focused on adding detail to the preferred alternative
released by CalFed in its June 1999 draft Programmatic Environmental Report/Statement
The framework focuses on Stage I - the first seven years-of the 30 year CalFed Program.
It identifies specific actions to improve the quality and reliability of Delta water supplies,
increase water use efficiency across the state, restore the Bay-Delta ecosystem and
stabilite Delta levees at an estimated cost of $8.6 billion.
Staff will be making a presentation on this update.
