Senior Center Department and Statistics Report ( City of Carlsbad Parks & Recreation GENERAL Senior Center upgrades Senior Center REPORT January 4, 2017 Staff have received initial plans for the upgrades that will be taking place over the next several months. Included in this plan is interior and exterior paint throughout the building, new vinyl flooring in the auditorium, computer room, and billiards room, library/lounge and new carpet in the offices. These upgrades are expected to take place over the next several months as we prepare for the opening of the Pine Avenue Park Community Center Hepatitis A preventions Due to the continued concern of the County of San Diego Hepatitis A outbreak, Senior Center staff requested funding to replace specific furniture in the Senior Center. Staff is currently working with the architectural firm that designed the new Pine Avenue Community Center and is under contract to for the Senior Center interior and exterior upgrades. The new furniture, which will be placed in the all the common areas as well as the Library/Lounge will be a vinyl based allowing staff to clean and sanitize more frequently. Senior Prom moving forward The second annual "Senior Prom" is in the beginning stages of planning. Staff have met with a student from Sage Creek High School who has selected the prom as her "Genius Project". Over the next few weeks, this student will meet with Senior Center staff as well as other partner organizations to plan another amazing event, and give this student an opportunity to learn valuable leadership experience along with the ability to serve her community by interacting with members of the senior population. Program Collaboration The weekly ceramics class participants presented a special holiday treat to those that participated in the Senior Center Holiday Lunch on Friday, December 22. The ceramic class prepared custom holiday magnets for everyone in attendance for lunch. Additionally, the City of Carlsbad's L.I.T.E. teen program prepared and delivered over 200 "candy grams" for both the dining room participants as well the home meal recipients, who also received personalized placemats and Christmas cards. Special delivery for Christmas On Friday, December 23rd, Senior Center staff prepared and assisted with the delivery of over 99 meals for weekend of Christmas. In addition to the meals, staff collaborated with several differently organizations to ensure those who were homebound felt special. The City of Carlsbad's L.I.T.E. teen program prepared "candy grams", personalized placemats and Christmas cards. Home Instead, a personalized home care company donated gifts to be delivered to the home meal participants as well. Senior Opportunities outside of the Senior Center Staff recently met with a representative from Silver Age Yoga Outreach Community (SAYCO). SAYCO provides free yoga instruction throughout San Diego County for senior citizens. Staff is currently researching possible locations to host the SAYCO program.
