Exhibits 1.Senior Center Department and Statistics Report SENIOR COMMISSION Senior Center REPORT January 3, 2019 GENERAL Senior Center Monthly Newsletter In December, Senior Center staff collaborated with the City of Carlsbad Communications Department to refresh and relaunch the monthly newsletter. Formerly named the City of Carlsbad Seaside Buzz, the updated newsletter has been rebranded as the Seaside Insider and will feature graphic images more aligned with the Carlsbad community as well as enhanced color and format. Starting in January the newsletter will be distributed beyond the center and throughout the community to expand awareness and networking of all the programs and activities available at the City of Carlsbad Senior Center. Senior Center Flooding / Temporary Relocation of Computers to Resource Room On December 6, the senior center experienced disastrous flooding affecting rooms on the east side of the building. A flood restoration contractor was hired for reconstruction efforts. The repairs will be complete as soon as possible. The IT Department temporarily installed three computers and one printer in the resource room for Seniors who rely on the center’s computer services. Be A Santa to a Senior Campaign Holiday gifts were donated by the community and from Jefferson Elementary School "Kids for Peace" club to distribute to the homebound Seniors program in Carlsbad. On December 18, the second graders from Jefferson elementary visited the center to perform holiday songs and present these gifts and cards. Children, parents, and teachers were all present for the joyful sharing of holiday spirit with the City of Carlsbad’s Seniors. The L.I.T.E. Program Shares with Seniors over the Holidays Leadership in Training and Education after school program at the Pine Avenue Community Center created 400 candy grams for the next door Senior Center. Since the program meets after school, students delivered the gifts to Senior Center staff to share at the holiday luncheon on Friday, December 21, 2019. The remaining grams will be shared with seniors that participate in the transportation services and home meal delivery program. L.I.T.E. students are middle and high schoolers who participate in the after school program Monday – Friday next door at Pine. Intergenerational Programs: Painting with Polly Senior Center volunteer and art instructor, Polly Fukuhara, volunteered to instruct acrylic painting to the L.I.T.E. students on December 20, sharing her passion for painting while unleashing the inner artist of the students. This program will parlay into an afterschool program every Wednesday at the Pine Avenue Community Center at 3 p.m. Polly was enthusiastic and excited about connecting with youth and injecting creativity into their young lives. Carlsbad High School Choir Performs at the Senior Holiday Luncheon On Friday, December 21, 2018 the award-winning Carlsbad High School choir performed at the Senior Holiday Luncheon and showered the audience with holiday cheer. The new year will bring an opportunity for them to collaborate with the Seaside Singers in the spring performance. C cityof Carlsbad Par_ks &_Recreation New Year’s Celebration Seniors will celebrate the welcoming of a new year on Monday, December 31, 2018 in formal attire with flair. Marine Corp. Squadron Vipers 169 joined the celebration and the Senior Center Knitting Club presented baby booties for the Viper families. The City of Carlsbad adopted the squadron in 2016 and the Senior Center regularly collaborates with them on special projects to show their support of the tremendous service they provide to protect our freedom. Upcoming Events •Tech Talk with Teens, free tech workshops at Pine Avenue Community Center led by Sage Creek High School student Rose Peterson, Jan 5, 12, 19, 26, 10-11 a.m. •The Senior Center will be honoring the Hi-Noon Rotary Club that volunteers as drivers for the home meal delivery. The group will be honored with a plaque of gratitude and appreciation in January. •Senior Prom plans underway with Sage Creek High School students. The tentative date is in February but still in development with tentative plans and dates. •City of Carlsbad Senior Center will host the Intergenerational Council North County on Wednesday, March 13, 2019. This is a bi-monthly meeting organized by San Diego County IG Program specialists.
