The Commission Agenda is posted on the Senior Citizens Commission page on a monthly basis. PURPOSE: To encourage and promote senior citizen involvement and participation in City activities. To provide an avenue for senior citizens to express their concerns to City officials. To provide regular input regarding senior citizen- related problems in the community. To make recommendations to the City Council on issues pertaining to seniors in the community. The Commission advises City Council on a wide range of issues relevant to older adults. The Commission also provides opportunities to educate seniors, their families and caregivers on these issues. The Commission consists of 9 Council-appointed Santa Monica residents. Meetings are held on the 3rd Wednesday of each month form 1:30pm - 3:30pm at the Ken Edwards Center (1527 4th St). The Commission acts as a voice for the City's senior population. The Senior Commission meets on the first Wednesday on each month at 10:00 a.m. Senior Commission meetings are held in the Council Chambers at Walnut City Hall, 21201 La Puente Road, Walnut, CA 91789. The powers and duties are set forth in Chapter 2.56 of the Vista Municipal Code. The Commission’s charge is to: a) identify, study and analyze the problems and needs pertaining to senior citizens and devise methods of focusing the attention of the community in solving them; b) inventory community resources for dealing with such needs and problems; c) determine which agencies, organizations and institutions are most capable of dealing with specific needs and problems and to recommend development and implementation of effective programs; d) periodically review the effectiveness of programs and, when necessary, recommend modification and redirection and use of alternative or additional resources; provide a forum before which senior citizens may bring their specific problems; e) study and make recommendations to the City Council on any other problems and needs of senior citizens which the City Council or the Commission may deem appropriate. There are seven members on the Commission who serve two-year terms; at least three members shall be senior citizens. Community Services Program Manager Donna Meester is the Staff Liaison. Qualifications for membership: Resident of the City of Vista 18 years of age At least three members of the Commission must be 55 years of age or older.
